Has anyone ever been a courier on an airplane?

There are websites where you can sign up to be a courier, and receive and 80% discount on airfare. Is this legitimate?

I haven't done it, though I know someone who did, a few years ago. I agree though, it does seem a bit off, somehow. Why can't the crew take the package or whatever?
