Emb-170/190 vs. A318?
Which of the two airframes is more efficient for short range (under 1000 nm) flights? which would be more fitting for the Low Cost Carriers ,LCCs, today?
Although there aren't many A318's compared to Embraer 190's, what is the main reason? CASM? Price? Turn-around times?

The two aircraft really don't compete with each other. The Embraer 190 was designed as a regional aircraft and seats around 90-100 passengers depending on how the aircraft is configured. The A318 is a shortened A319/A320 and seats around 107-129 passengers depending on configuration. The A318 competes more with the Boeing 717 and 767-700 than with regional jets.
Why isn't the A318 a bigger seller? For one thing, no aircraft in that size range has sold well in recent years. The 717 has been discontinued due to slow sales and the 737-600 has been a sales bust as well. There simply isn't much demand for aircraft of this size.
Which is more fitting for LCCs? That depends on the routes that they plan to fly. For routes with lighter passenger loads, the Embraer 190 is more efficient. Because of its structural commonality with the larger A320, the A318 is relatively heavy for a smaller capacity aircraft. That means that it has a higher fuel burn. However, that extra weight can be an advantage for longer routes because the A318 can carry more fuel, so it carries more passengers for a longer distance. For longer routes that require more passenger capacity than an Embraer 190, the A318 would probably be more profitable.
