Manuf Employee
Is the auto manuf. debacle a result of unions causing overpayment of employees with a result of bankruptcy?
It sure looks like it to me.
I always hated unions and now they have proven that they can single handedly turn an industry upside down and bankrupt it.
More accurately, it is a result of management mismanaging - instead of putting R&D into fuel efficient/quality cars, American auto manufacturers continued to churn out gas guzzlers in the face of higher fuel costs because there was more profit per vehicle. Once the vehicles stopped selling, it didn't matter how much profit per vehicle these big machines made, any amount times zero is still zero.
You can hate unions all you want, but without them, you wouldn't have minimum wage laws, safety and health laws, pension laws, etc. which protect you regardless of whether you are a union member or not. Have some unions not fully adjusted to new realities? Of course, much as auto management didn't adjust.
And btw, I don't see you criticizing management for continuing to take large bonuses while the companies were bleeding red ink. Seems to me that anyone with a white collar are the ones who drove the auto companies bankrupt, not the guys on the line.
