Does a Bombardier CRJ-200 have propellers?

I'm referring to a Continental Airlines airplane. I just image googled it and it shows mostly jet engines. However one pic(1st page) shows a high wing with props. Thanks.

It has one, attached to the emergency deployable RAT (Ram Air Turbine), essentially a windmill that would deploy from a compartment on the right side of the aircraft nose, to provide electrical power for the systems if the engines were to fail.

A high wing aircraft with props is most likely a Dash8 (later renamed Q's) from the deHavilland company (which was bought and amalgamated with the Canadair company--along with Short Brothers and LearJet to form Bombardier Aerospace). The nose of the Dash8 is not totally dissimilar from that of the Challenger business aircraft (and therefore to the various CRJ's) but when those aircraft were designed, they were not part of the same company so the resemblance is coincidental.
Since Continental also operates Q400, this is the most likely explanation.

See the World From Above, Without Flying!

If you are an amateur film director, you know well that technology means all for your movies.
Whether it is high definition, or special effects added to your scenes, having the possibility to use the latest developments of cinema technologies can only hep improve the quality of your images.

And if you are into documentary movies, you may want to add aerial views of the ground, or in-flight images, to provide a different point of view.
To do this, you no longer need to invest large sums in renting small aircraft and expensive equipment, since all you need is a small Air Camera.

An Air Camera, as the name goes, is a digital videocamera mounted on a small helicopter which, depending on models and characteristics, can fly up to 20 minutes, with a video camera range up to approximately 700 meters.
It will excel with its high resolution CCD wireless video camera and anti-vibration mounting system, allowing you to shoot sharp and firm images from above.

Equipped with flight stabilizers, it is perfect not only for professional and amateur directors, but can also be a perfect tool for
video surveillance and monitoring of large areas, where the human eye may not reach, or a human observer might be in danger.

A particular feature available on some models is the ability to switch between two different flying modes, video and active. Video mode is designed for training and shooting video, and the helicopter will be less responsive and switching between different types of images (i.e. zooming in and out) would be slower. The active mode is designed for recreational flying, when the helicopter needs to be more responsive.

Armed with all of its high-tech features, straightforward use and superior video quality, the Air Camera is designed for success. Whether you need high quality aerial video for a sporting event, advertising, video surveillance or any other purpose you will get it done efficiently and professionally with Air Camera.

This kind of items, as well as a wide array of devices for your personal security and privacy, are available in specialized online Spy Shops that you can visit for more information.

In the film Superman, why does the helicopter lose control?

For those who haven't seen the film in awhile, a helicopter's (I presume a Bell Jet Ranger) skid catches on a ground cable that comes loose. I'm not sure why it loses control (the cable snaps as the aircraft attempts liftoff) and was wondering if anyone can enlighten me.

The approximated dialogue scene goes like this:

PILOT: Malfunction! I can't get liftoff!
GROUND: It's a cable? Set it down! Set it down!
PILOT: Oh, my God! We've got stabilizer rotor control! I can't hold it, I can't! I can't hold it, I can't!

Here's the clip if anyone wants to see what I mean.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U83YzCXI22U

me - i doublechecked the scene and there is no footage showing the snapped cable interfering with the tail rotor, which i know is essential to stabilizing the copter. the cable snaps and the next scene of the copter shows it starting to spin about 5-10 feet over the heliport.

It's a movie about an alien who can fly without any explanation on how, is invulnerable, can turn back time by reversing the earths rotation (totally illogical) and the bad guy is going to use a nuclear weapon to send california into the sea (totally impossible). YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY THE HELICOPTER LOST CONTROL!

Please! it was a movie! It lost control because if it didn't the plot would not have moved forward.

Huge Job Opportunities in Indian Aviation Industry

After Sept 11, 2001 when USA got struck by terrorist attack, almost all the industries has been affected. But Aviation Industry is one of the hardest hit, as the major airlines likes of Swiss Air and American airlines. But despite of all these happenings Indian Aviation industry though minute could withstand this pressure and had grown leaps and bounds. This is  due to the growth of Indian economy and tourism industry in particular in the last few years.

In the last two years many a new airlines have come to the fore in a huge way and many huge industries have declared their wishes to enter into this industry. Another major leap was the open sky policy of Government of India permitting the existing private airlines in India to fly to foreign destinations.

It does require a special mention that with such expansions planned by major aviation companies and new companies formed there is a vast manpower requirement. Qualified manpower is in huge abundance in India but they need a proper direction to capitalise on this surge in industry. When the human resources needed by these companies were less in number, it was easy to tap from a huge HR bank but when the demand for such HR increased they are finding it extremely difficult to maintain the quality of HR selected for these jobs especially when more and more foreign airlines are flying into India offering high salary packages forcing the better of HR to go with these companies.

It is important to mention here that Indian aviation industry grew by 20% second only to BPO industry in services sector and then comes the concept of no frills airline the market for which is growing vastly. Many no frills airline have already announced their plans to start services to India a few of them are Nok Air, Air Asia-Thailand, Air Arabia etc.

The boom in the aviation sector in India can be gauged by the fact that in one year, the number of people seeking pilot licenses and airhostess training has multiplied three times. In April 2005, it was 300. In April 2006, the number rose to 1045. The civil aviation industry is booming. Indian airlines placed orders for over 400 aircraft worth a whopping $30 billion for its operational requirements. That shows a requirement of 5600 pilots, 19000 airhostess or cabin crew, 24000 technicians, 36000 ground handling crew and various other related vacancies.

And these aviation industry vacancies are all fresh vacancies without including vacancies that may come up in the existing aircrafts.

Also the pay packages offered by the various Indian airlines have also seen an upward trend due to very few number of trained pilots and cabin crew availability. Hence there is an opportunity for you.

Indian aviation is witnessing a mushrooming of new airlines especially low cost carriers. Besides the existing Air Deccan, newly launched Spicejet and value airline Kingfisher Airlines, there are Indus Airways, Air One, East West Airlines, Go Airways, Magic Air and Crystal Air who are getting ready to fly Indian sky soon. India is to see the launch of at least 14 such airlines. Low cost start-up carrier IndiGo had stunned the aviation industry by placing orders for 100 aircraft at a list price of over $6 billion last year.

It is anyone’s guess as to Human Resource Requirements, especially pilots, airhostesses, flight attendants and other cabin crew, that are going to come up in the Aviation Sector. Demand is much above the number of people acquiring training for the same. Jet Airways along with Sahara India has about 47 percent share of the domestic aviation market, followed by Indian Airlines (28 per cent), Air Deccan (11 per cent), Kingfisher (6 per cent) and SpiceJet (5 per cent) as on October2006.
Jet Airways tops the list of domestic and national carrier operators with 8,168 flights operating till June 2005. Indian Airlines ranks second with 7,562 flights, followed by Sahara (3,225 flights), Air Deccan (2,889 flights), Spice Jet (483 flights) and Kingfisher Airlines (267 flights).

The sudden boom in Indian aviation has caught even the normally market savvy global aerospace manufacturers unawares. Recently, both Boeing and Airbus said they had underestimated Indian growth. This means global players are also coming into the scene.

It wasn't surprising since statistics compiled by Airbus Industrie showed that Indian carriers accounted for 327 out of the 2,140 firm orders for new aircraft that were placed with it and rival Boeing in 2005. This does not take into account the orders placed for smaller airplanes with other manufacturers like ATR and Dassault - which, too, are flooded with offers from private Indian carriers.
The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, Embraer, is bullish on the prospects in the Indian market. Their forecast is that between 2006 and 2010, the demand for 30-120-seater planes in India would be around 165, which is about 40 per cent of the demand of the Asia-Pacific region. The value of these aircraft would be around $4 billion.
They feel that a majority of the aircraft required will be in the 61-120-seat capacity segment. 70 per cent of these would be required for market growth while there would be a small demand for replacement.

Globalysis Ltd.forecasts growth in India's aviation market, to be one of the fastest growing in the world, for the years 2007-2008. The Globalysis research report forecasts growth in India's aviation market of
approximately 28% in 2007 and 24% in 2008, for a total of approximately 52 million passengers being carried in 2008.

From the above given facts this is the right time to invest in a business opportunity and anyone with cash and liquidity can go in for the kill.

Etihad Airways

In just six years Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi has managed to fly to 60 destinations worldwide. The following articles is about the success and plans of Etihad Airways. James Hogan, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abu Dhabi-based carrier says: "No airline in the history of aviation has achieved that. The advantage we have compared to a legacy carrier is that we are just six years old." Talking to The Emirates Business Newspaper, he discussed key challenges that the airline needed to tackle in 2010, besides the steps being planned to make it break-even in 2011 and move into profitability.

Budget Carriers:

Etihad confirmed they have no plans yet to launch a budget carrier.

Etihad had recently introduced the A320 (single-aisle plane typically operated by a low-cost carrier) aircraft to give greater frequency, and that feeds well into the long-haul aircraft.

Biggest challenges for 2010:

James confirmed that the challenge for Etihad in 2010 is to manage yields. What we have seen in 2008 is that the airline industry worldwide saw yields depressed.Looking at the first six months of 2010, the airline has a seat factor target for each month. When we see the seat factor that we would expect in the first six months of this year – the economy traffic layering is strong. The business and first class traffic is not where we would like it to be yet in regards to the yields, but a part of it is a slowdown due to European cold snap. And these factors impact on yields. But the aviation industry will see yields moving back to 2008 levels this year because there was heavy discounting in 2009. Besides, we have to now continue to focus on our customer, focus very hard on our costs, our ratios, our efficiencies and our utilisation of resources.

James added that if you look at Iata statistics, the Middle East was the only region that was positive in 2009. And Etihad outperformed those statistics in passengers. But what that meant is that European, Southeast Asian carriers put more capacity, or, diverted capacity, into the Middle East, and pushed down prices.

In 2009, the Middle East, which is our highest yielding market, was down 45 per cent over the previous year. People did not travel due to the flu concerns besides the global financial crisis. But looking into this year, we are seeing positive signs. The advanced sales are stronger compared to the same months last year. The issue is just getting that corporate traffic moving.

Premium Traffic:

Going back to the customer, the economy traffic is there, which is good. We are layering the business over the next six months. It is the premium traffic, which is key, and the cold snap in Europe has not helped at the start. But what we do see out of Europe and Australia is strong business cabin traffic. The advantage we have in Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia, the infrastructure projects have continued. Fifty per cent of Etihad traffic comes out of Abu Dhabi. So that is certainly a plus. What is also positive is India and China. While China has certainly come back strong on cargo volumes, and India is coming back strongly, too.

Oil Prices:

James advised that Etihad are hedged moving forward and have a three-year rolling hedging programme which is continually reviewed with the board.

New Aircraft:

Etihad announced they will introduce the Boeing 787s and Airbus A380s over the next three to five years, which provides enough aircraft to 2018-2020.

Also, Etihad took delivery of 11 aircraft in 2009, opened up new destinations, during a very tough competitive period. Etihad id due to receive their first Airbus A380 in 2013 and the first Boeing's 787 in 2014 and confirmed they have 35 firm orders for the 787s and 10 firm orders for the A380s.

New Routes:

Etihad plan to launch two new destinations this year – Sri Lanka and Japan (Nagoya and Narita). While Narita would be a direct flight from Abu Dhabi – five times a week, Nagoya will operate via Beijing.

Another thing we have done is work with other carriers – out of America, with American Airlines, out of Australia, Qantas. And just before Christmas, Etihad signed an agreement contract with Al Italia, which gives us Rome.

Etihad Airways in 2010:

James advised that Aviation has always been a tough business but the Gulf airlines still have a fantastic opportunity to move share from the European hubs and the Asian hubs over the Gulf for the customer as one stop versus two stops. He does not believe this year will be as hard as 2009, in respect of issues such as Swine Flu and The Financial Crisis. James added that he is a huge believer in the Abu Dhabi story, and that includes the Grand Prix, Yas Islands and others. So as Etihad Airways builds its story and the other projects of Abu Dhabi come online, that gives us a very positive view for 2010.

James Hogan CEO, Etihad Airways - joined Etihad Airways in September 2006 and was instrumental in adding 13 new destinations and 21 new aircraft to the Abu Dhabi-based airline that more than doubled the number of passengers carried. With some 30 years of travel industry expertise, Hogan has overseen the rapid growth of UAE's national airline.

Under his stewardship, the airline made history in June 2008 with one of the largest orders of passenger jets – 205 aircraft worth approximately $43 billion (Dh158bn) at list prices. James was named 'Aviation CEO of the Year' by CEO Magazine in November 2008.
