Continental convicted in Concorde crash trial

Us-based Continental Airlines has been convicted of manslaughter over the deaths of 113 people in the Concorde crash outside Paris 10 years ago and ordered to pay 1, 2 million euro's (US$ 1, 6-million) in damages and fines.

There was an "incontestable link" between the "negligence" of Continental and the fireball that brought down the supersonic jet on july,25,2000.The fireball ignited when one of the aircrafts tyres ran over a piece of metal from one of the US carriers aircraft during takeoff, Judge Dominique Andreassier said in Pontoise,France.

The verdict, delivered seven years after Concorde's last commercial takeoff, "will send a shock wave across the industry" and could lead to pilots and mechanics "clamming up for fear of criminal prosecution," said Kenneth Quinn, a US expert in aviation law.

The crash hastened the demise of Concorde with flights grounded for 16 months after the disaster and the aircraft returning to service as demand for air travel fell following the September 11 terrorist attacks. Booking never fully recovered on the 1350 mph SST.

Continental must pay a 200000 euro fine and one million euro's to Air France –KLM Group, operator of the doomed flight.

Continental, which has its main hub in Houston, said the verdict was "absurd" and that "to find that any crime was committed in this tragic accident is not supported either by the evidence at trial or by aviation authorities and experts."

Olivier Metzer, a lawyer for carrier, which merged with United Airlines in October last year to form United Continental Holdings Inc., said it would appeal."It is a political decision, a decision that suits all the French parties," he said.

"Once again, it is the French interests that are of concern."

Continental mechanic John Taylor also received a 15-month suspended sentence and a 2000-euro fine after the court ruled he ignored the risk of using the wrong materials in maintenance.

The Concorde crashed shortly after takeoff from Paris while on a German charter headed to New York. Air France Flight AF4590 was carrying 100 passengers and nine crew. Four people were killed in a hotel hit by the ‘plane.

French crash investigator, BEA, issued its final report in 2002, saying the aircraft ran over a metal strip from a Continental aircraft that had taken off earlier. The strip tore into Concorde's wheel, sending debris into fuel tanks, sparking a fire. The danger posed by exploding tyres, noted after five incidents in 1979 and two in 1993, was also faulted in the report.

Metzner disputed the findings during the four-month trial, saying the investigation ignored witnesses who said the aircraft was already on fire when it hit the debris. The court rejected his arguments.

European Aeronautic, Defense and Space Co. (EADS) the successor company to concords French manufacturer Aerospatiale was also found civilly liable for the accident.

The court said former Aerospatiale employees, Henri Perrier and Jacques Herubel, should have "undertaken a full examination of the possible consequences of a fuel leakage resulting from the perforation of the lower surface of a fuel tank after a tyre-burst."The two men were cleared of criminal wrongdoing, as were Claude Frantzen, a former official at Frances Civil aviation authority, and Stanley Ford, a manager at Continental.

Boeing Boosts Prices, Drops B787-3

Boeing has increased the prices of its new aircraft by about 5, 2%, the first increase in two years, and has also decided to drop the short-haul version of the 787 Dream liner.

"Higher costs of wages, goods and services are driving the boost," said Jim Proulx, a spokesman at Boeings commercial headquarters in Seattle. He confirmed the changes made to the price list on Chicago-based Boeings website recently as well as the withdrawal of the 787-3 variant.

Boeings last price increase, a 2, 6% boost, was in 2008, Proulx said. Most airlines and leasing companies get discounts based on how many aircraft they buy.

The average price for the smallest Boeing jet, the single-aisle 737, is now about $71,-4-million, up from about $69, 3-million. The 777s list price rose to about $258, 2-million from $ 246 million. The two 787 models still being offered now average $201, 7-million, up from $183, 3-million.

The 787-3 was designed to carry as many as 330 passengers as far as 3500 miles compared with the 787-8's top capacity of 250 people and 9400-mile range. Boeing has been reviewing the models future after All Nippon Airways swapped its 787-3 order for another variant last year.

All Nippon was the last carrier that still has an order for the 787-3, which was designed specially for the Japanese market.

Boeing diverted resources from the short-haul model in 2008 as it struggled to move the long-distance 787-8 toward production amid problems with parts shortages, redesigns and incomplete work by suppliers. The Dream liners entry into service is now running about three years behind schedule.

Embraer Names National Airways Corporation As It's New Authorized Service Centre

Embrear has expanded its customer support network in South Africa following the recent signing of a five-year agreement with Lanseria International Airport-based National Airways Corporation making it the Authorized Service Centre (ASC) for the Embrear EMB 110 Bandeirante and the EMB 120 Brasilia.

This contract formalizes the renewal of a five-year agreement with Nature link, which was recently purchased by NAC. The new ASC will provide routine checks, as well as scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for the commercial aircraft.

Leandro Laia,Embraers director for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, said after the signing of the contract:"With nearly 50 EMB 110s and EMB 120s flying in Africa, today, we looked for expertise, reputation and competitive prices, in order to offer the best to our customers."

NAC will have access to Embraers structure-specific repair solutions and extended databases, and will be entitled to handle airframe and warranty issues on behalf of Embraer customers.

Dassault Scores A "First"

Dassault Falcon has received approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration for the use of 3D data for type design in the completions process of Falcon Aircraft.

The approval applies to completions for production aircraft, including the Falcon 900 and 2000 series, as well as the 7X.Dassault previously received approval for 3D data on the basic design of the Falcon 7X when it was jointly certified by the FAA and the EASA in 2007, making it the first aircraft to be fully approved for the use of 3d data throughout the entire manufacturing process.

The 7X was the first Falcon to be designed fully within the framework of Dassaults Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) philosophy .The programme set the groundwork for the incorporation of 3D data from the manufacturing process through to completions and operations. Key benefits include greater accuracy during the specification and design process, including the opportunity for the customer to visualize the final configuration of the aircraft.

Definition of the aircraft specification in 3D also ensures compatibility of component placement with maintenance activities and a higher overall quality of completions process.

The approval required Dassault Falcon to develop detailed processes for the use, storage and long-term retention of 3D data, including disaster recovery plans. Additionally, Dassault Falcon developed an extensive training programme for those involved in the process.

My 16 year old wants to travel from Berlin to Montreal on Air France on the UM program and check herself in?

I would like to know if it is possible for her to check in herself in Berlin and then join the UM program at that point -- flying from Berlin to Paris to Montreal; and then on to Winnipeg? What fees are involved and what forms are needed? Would Air France help her in Berlin and Paris and Montreal? Thank you.

the whole point of UM is that somebody has responsibility for kid at all times--so somebody has to sign her into AF custody in Berlin, and sign her out in YWG.

At 16 she doesn't *need* to be UM, but you can get her the service. Ask AF, not here!

Airline Safety

Increasing Your Odds With Airline Safety

Long before, but especially since the 911 airline hijackings, people are weary of airline travel. A lot of people want to know they are riding on a safe airline. Airlines for the most part are safe, and the most dangerous factors usually include flying conditions (such as storms, or mountain terrain). Proper planning of destinations and good airline security lessens the chance of terrorists, bombs and hijackings. Of course there are always the rare occasions that something horrible will happen, but it is said to be 100s of times more dangerous to travel by car than it is by plane. That statistic should be comfort enough. The International Aviation Safety Assessment is a guide to which countries meet the airline safety checks, not the airlines themselves.

The majority of airline accidents occur on take off and landing, so you should try and book flights that don't have a stop over destination. That's a good preventative measure right there, not only that, but you wont have to sit and wait to change planes half way through your flight. Another good way to fly safer is to know that larger airplanes have stricter rules and the passengers have a better chance of survival if the plane should crash, so you might want to consider booking your flight with a large airplane of thirty or more passengers.

Like anything else, always be aware of the closest emergency exit, and consider keeping your seat belt on at all times while seated. This is especially true if you are nervous about turbulence; which is often unexpected and can cause injury. You should also keep anything too heavy out of the overhead carrier in case of turbulence. You don't want anything to fall on you or anyone else. Also, allow the flight attendants to handle your hot drinks and food as they are trained to handle it and can safely manage giving it to you. You don't want to be walking around with a hot cup of coffee in your hand and have some turbulence spill it all over you or someone else.

As far as airplane crashes go, they are very rare. However, if the incident should occur, try to remain calm and listen to the flight attendants. They know how to handle situations and keep you safe. Often the very front or very back of the plane is the safest. Sitting close to the wings is the worse place to sit. If the plane wings get torn off in a crash it could tear the fuselage and cause death to anyone near the carnage.

But don't worry, airline travel is safe. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just believe you will live and you don't have anything to worry about.

Do you think all of this airline safety is over doing it a bit?

I mean, if you were a terrorist, wouldn't you look at blowing up airplanes as the last thing on your list since all of the overprotection, why not terrorize someting else....

While our protection is important, it seems all security measures are an after the fact, reactionary overkill.

All liquids banned??? I get concerned when I pass through the security check point, and yet cannot take my Starbucks coffee, bottle of water, (all bought within the secured area) on to the plane. Security that cannot discern between a latte' and a bomb worries me.

Air News On Airbus,Boeing In Race For Worlds Largest Single Order,Bells New Commercial Helicopter & Eurocopter X3 Hybrid Makes Its Maiden Flight

The race between Airbus and Boeing is on as to which manufacturer can sell the most  ,its of a single type at one crack, with Airbus having taken an early lead with a massive 180-airliner order from IndiGo,Indias largest low cost carrier.

As we reported in our February edition, what is claimed to be the largest airliner order in aviation history was announced late in January immediately after IndiGo signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 180 Airbus A320 aircraft of which 150 will be the new re-engined A320neo model and 30 will be A320s.

Apart from being the largest single firm order number in commercial aviation history for large jets, as well as for a single type, in this case, the A320 Family, it also makes IndiGo one of the launch customers for the A320neo. Engine selection will be announced by the airline at a later date.

Airbus recently logged its 10000th order with affirm contract from Virgin America for 60 A320s, including 30 A320neo aircraft. This is the first firm order for the A320 new engine option; therefore Virgin America becomes the official launch customer for the A320neo. (The IndiGo order had not been formally finalized at the time of writing).

Airbus last year increased its production output for the ninth year in a row and achieved a new company record of 510(2009:498) commercial aircraft deliveries to 94 customers (of which 19 were new).

Deliveries included 401 A320 Family aircraft,91 A330/A340s and 18 A380s .In its military division, Airbus delivered 20 light and medium military and transport aircraft(CN235 and C295),exceeding the 2009 figure by four aircraft.

Airbus booked 644 commercial aircraft orders (574 net) in 2010.The value of the new orders surpassed US$84-billion gross (US$ 74-billion net) at list prices. This represents 51% by units of the 2010 gross worldwide market share of aircraft beyond 100 seats (52% net).Airbus won 21 new orders for its CN235 and C295 military aircraft.

Boeing Challenges

Meanwhile ,our US Editor,Ed Hirsc, reports from Miami that Delta Air Lines Inc., the worlds second-largest carrier, plans to order 100 to 200 narrow-body jets and seeks options for 200 more as it replaces older planes.

A request for proposals went to manufacturers recently, and deliveries may begin as soon as 2013.

Atlanta-based Delta told employees on an internal website that the request had gone to "several" manufacturers which it did not identify. Airbus and Boeing are the biggest commercial-jet makers, but the use of the term "several" in the Delta statement could mean that the airline might also be including regional jet-sized aircraft in its orders from manufacturers such as Embraer and Bombardier.

New single-aisle ‘plane such as the Airbus A320 Family or various marques of the Boeing 737NG would be used on domestic routes as Delta retires aging aircraft.

Ordering the full 200 aircraft would be a record-but only if they were all of the same type, eclipsing the mark set when IndiGo said it would buy 130 Airbus A320 ,with a value of $15-billion at list prices.

"We're now starting a plan for the long term," Nat Pieper, vice president of fleet strategy and transactions, said on the Delta website posting."The order will ensure that we continue to maintain a flexible, cost-efficient fleet that meets our   customer's needs in the years to come, replacing retiring airplanes and providing for domestic mainline growth."

Both the 737 and the A320 ate twin-engine models that seat about 125 to 185 people. List prices for each aircraft rage from about $ 63-million to $ 95-million, depending on the version.

Filling the full order with Boeing 737-800s, the top-selling US Jet, would cost $ 16, 2-billion at list prices. Airlines typically buy at a discount.

Pieper said the aircraft being replaced included Boeing DC-9s that averaged 34 years old, Boeing 757-200s that were 18 years old and A320S that were 16 years old. Delta has also been acquiring used jets, including five Boeing 757-200s and 33 MD-90s, and will continue to look for additional used ‘planes, Pieper said."We'll evaluate all our options," he wrote.

Boeing has also scored a number of large orders recently, one of the latest being from the CIT Group Inc.Which placed an order for 38 Next-Generation 737 aircraft and purchase rights for seven additional 737s.

The order, with deliveries into 2017, includes 15 737-900ER (extended range) and 23 737-800 airliners. It is the largest order placed by a leasing company for the 737-900ER, the largest and newest member of the Boeing Next-Generation 737 family. This is also the largest order placed by CIT for Boeing aircraft.

In a later development ,Boeing announced that it had received final approval from Chinese Government confirming a $19-billion aircraft agreement .Chinas approval of airline contracts for 200 orders covers aircraft to be delivered over a three-year period,2011-2013,mainly 737S and 777s.

Today, Boeing jets are a mainstay in Chinas air travel and cargo system, representing more than50% of all commercial jetliners operating in China. Over the next 20 years, Boeing projects that China will need 4330 new aircraft, worth more than $480-billion.

Boeing recorded 462 commercial aircraft deliveries in 2010, meeting company guidance of approximately 460 deliveries during the year.

Boeing posted 530 net commercial orders for the year as air carrier's transition from economic recovery to expansion. Boeing Commercial Airplanes maintains strong order base of 3443 unfilled orders.

Bell Working On New Commercial Helicopter

Bell Helicopter has begun development of all-new commercial helicopters to bolster a product line that has had only one significant addition in more than three decades.

In a memo sent to Bell employees worldwide recently, the company announced "the formal launch of ‘Magellan ‘bringing a new product to the marketplace in response to our future customer needs." The memo gave few details, except that it follows an initiative known as project X.

Project X was the most recent phase of several years of planning and market research aimed at determining the requirements and market for alarge, longer-range helicopter than anything Bell now builds. The new aircraft will apparently be aimed principally at the offshore oil industry, but will have many other potential uses.

Bells existing aircraft in that market segment, the model 412, is essentially a much upgraded version of the early Huey military helicopters. It lacks the range and performance of newer competitors. That market segment already has a number of modern helicopters, notably the highly successful Augusta Westland AW139.

"This is a strong growth market for both civil and military uses," said Richard Aboulafia, analyst for the Teal Group aerospace market forecasting firm, in Fairfax, a."Helicopter demand in the offshore oil industry in particular has been moving toward larger, longer-range aircraft."

Industry observers feel that the new aircraft will also help Bell by reassuring its existing customers that the company is continuing work on new civil products after along hiatus.

The Bell 429, launched in 2005 and just beginning to be delivered to customers, was the first new helicopter the company has developed for the civil market in more than 30 years.

Bell officials have so far declined to discuss the Magellan programme."Bell Helicopter is continuously investing in the development of both new products and the modernization of current products, but we're not going to talk about them until the right time," said Robert Hastings, the company's senior vice president of communications.

The Magellan programme launch appears to be timed for an unveiling at the Heli-Expo trade show in Orlando, Florida, this month, but sources said the company would not be discussing its plans even then.

Euro copters X3 Hybrid

The Euro copters X3 high-speed hybrid helicopter demonstrator, which made its maiden flight on September 6, 2010, has reached the programmes Step 1 speed objective by attaining a true airspeed of 180 knot in level flight at reduced level of engine power.

In the flight testing performed thus far, the flight envelope has been opened with and without autopilot to validate the basic hybrid demonstrator aircrafts stability and handling characteristics. The X3 has reached an altitude of 12500 feet performed man oeuvres with left and right turns at bank angles of up to 60 degrees.

The X3 flights to date were performed by Euro copter test pilot, Herve Jammayrac, and flight test engineer, Daniel Semioli,at the French DGA test facility in Istres.

"The X3 has performed extremely well, demonstrating handling and flight qualities that are exactly in line with our ground-based simulator evaluations," Jammayrac said."This helicopter is really built for speed, and our test team looks forward to taking the x3 to the next steps of its flight regime."

Having already surpassed the speed of a traditional helicopter, the next milestone for the demonstrator is the Step 2 phase at Euro copters headquarters in Marignane, France, where the X3 will enter a second set of flight tests during which it is expected to reach sustained cruise speeds in excess of 220 knots.

The X3 utilizes a Euro copter Dauphin helicopter airframe .It is equipped with two turbo shaft engines that power a five-blade main rotor system, along with two propellers installed on short-span fixed wings.

This hybrid configuration creates an advanced transportation system that offers the speed of a turboprop-powered aircraft and the full hover flight capabilities of a helicopter.

It is tailored to applications where operational costs, flight duration and mission success depend directly on the maximum cruising speed.

The X3 combines excellent vertical takeoff and landing capabilities with its designed fast cruise speeds of more than 220 knots. Euro copter envisions a wide range of applications for this concept, including long-distance search and rescue (SAR) missions, coast guard duties, border patrol missions, passenger transportation and inter-city shuttles services.

It could also be well-tailored for military missions in Special Forces operations, troop transportation, combat SAR and Medical evacuation-benefitting from the hybrid aircrafts combination of higher cruise speeds with excellent vertical takeoff and landing performance.

Why are Boeing 747-400s not used as much as they used to be for trans-Atlantic air travel?

I notice that Boeing 747-400's are being used less on certain trans-Atlantic, and some trans-Pacific routes...nowadays it seems to be more of a mix of twin-engine aircraft, MD-11s and some 747-400s on the transatlantic runs.. they even use twin-engine jets like the 777 on some long-haul trans-pacific routes...what are some of the reasons for this?
To Alibi...there's plans for a new 747, the 747-8 which is going to be the newest in a long line of very popular Boeing jets.
I want to fly someday on both the 747-400 and the 777..I think the 'Triple-Seven' is quite an achievement for Boeing.

kind of like what calnickel said, but let me put it another way. Instead of flying a higher number at once, we're now flying smarter. Since we've entered the information age, computers are able to use really advanced statistics and simulation to take data we already know about where people go, and try a bazillion combinations of flights and cities (also considering ticket price) to determine the most efficient way to do it. Before it ways always flying to a hub like JFK, crossing the atlantic by TWA or pan-am, arriving at another hub, and flying to your destination. Now they're able to come up with ways to eliminate more of the layovers and point people directly to where they need to be. I'm going out on a limb here but I think that's why those two airlines are out of business now.

For instance, if 10% of the people who fly from N. America to Europe are going to Scotland, it makes more sense to have a 777 or 767ER (I could be wrong on that plane btw) make the trip directly to Scotland twice a week, than it is to just load all the Scotland-bound people with the France-bound people with the Germany-bound people on a daily 747 to london, and have them all get on a second flight. It's better and more efficient to send them straight where they need to go. I think he's wrong on ETOPS though, it's just an abbreviation for Engines Turning Or Passengers Swimming!

The type of math and simulation needed to figure out these routes didn't exist back in the 60's when the 747 was being developed. This one reason why many people think airbus is doing the wrong thing with the A380, since bigger isn't necessarily better. 747s are still enormously popular for freight service and will alwyas be though.

An interesting aside is that apparently 747s are very popular in japan for short range flights to various islands, where they pack in around 500 people inside for a short time.
