Again, 1 does not fit this definition either— there are no positive divisors of 1 which are less that 1.

  • IN ANCIENT TIMES, WHY WERE PIGEONS USED FOR SENDING MESSAGES?

Pigeons were used for sending messages not only in ancient times, but as recently as early the 1900s, during World War I. According to some reports, a homing pigeon flew back to its home after flying over 1600 miles at the peak speed of 60 miles per hour. Exactly how such birds navigate themselves is still not clear. Scientists hypothesise that the pigeon uses a variety of sources like the direction of the Sun, Earth's magnetism, and odours associated with different places for finding its direction. Before the advent of telegraph, telephone and radio, using pigeons for sending messages was quite popular among the military, newspapers, and stock brokers. • WILL CREATING TWO TIME ZONES FOR INDIA SAVE ENERGY?

India geographically extends from 68 degrees East to 97 degrees East (29 degrees) from Gujarat to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, thereby encompassing two time zones. However, it has adopted the Allahabad meridian of 72 degrees, which makes it convenient for the railways, airlines and media. This leads to weird experiences for travelers from Central India who visit the North-Eastern states which receive daylight before 5 am. This entails an extra cost to the economy in terms of industrial arid office lighting spent in these regions, since daybreak here doesn't coincide with the rest of the country. Also, there tends to be more traffic when it is dark.

A person is asked to select a door (which is not opened immediately). Instead, one of the two unchosen doors are opened and the content is revealed, which incidentally turns out to be a goat. The person is now asked whether he would like to switch his choice to the other unopened door. This gets him thinking. Will changing his choice increase the possibility of winning the car? Common knowledge lets us assume that since now there are two closed doors (one with a goat and the other with a car), chances of winning a car if either of the doors are chosen is 1/2. Hence, it really isn't a winning situation to motivate a person to change the choice. However, what one needs to remember is the fact that when the person initially made the choice, all three doors were closed and the probability of having a goat behind a closed -toor was 2/3. Now that we already know of ie door that has a goat behind it, chances f winning the door with the car if the peron decides to change his initial choice is /3, which is higher than what he would am if he refuses to change his decision.

As a result, obesity has become a problem amongst Chinese teenagers. It's also seen as a fallout of the strict population policy of China which restricts couples from having more than one child, because of which parents and relatives tend to spoil their children with fatty foods.

The term jazz originated in southern United States (it is first recorded in 1909, applied to a type of ragtime dance), and it is tempting to speculate that its ancestor crossed the Atlantic on the slave ships from Africa. In the absence of any certain origin, various colourful alternative theories have been put forward, for instance, the name jazz came from the nickname of a certain Jasbo Brown, an itinerant musician along the banks of the Mississippi.

  • WHY DOES FEBRUARY HAVE 28 DAYS, AND JULY AND AUGUST, 31 DAYS?

According to a popular legend, July was named after Julius Caesar and hence it had 31 days. Later, when Augustus Caesar took over the Roman Empire, he wanted August, the month named after him, to have 31 days as well. Hence, the two extra days were taken from February, which was then left with 28 days. However, some historians d.on't agree with this reasoning. They believe February always had 28 days ever since the time of King Numa Pompilius. He decided that a year would have 355 days, the length of 12 lunar cycles. Back then, even numbers were considered unlucky So, he created seven months with 29 days, and four with 31. Since he now needed one short even-numbered month, he chose February, as it was considered the least favourite month for it arrived during the middle of winter. And hence, it was given only 28 days.

The original Santa Claus lived nowhere near the North Pole. If the 4th century bishop known as Saint Nicholas of Myra — the inspiration for Santa Claus — existed at all, he lived in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey Santa Claus is a corruption of the Dutch name Sinte Klaas for St Nicholas, the patron saint of children and unmarried girls. Tradition says he gave bags of gold to three daughters from a noble, but poor family as their dowries, thus saving them from a life of prostitution. As the legends developed in the Netherlands, the three bags of gold were replaced by a bulging sack of presents which Santa Claus distributed to children on December 6, St Nicholas' feast day Later, this custom caught on to other parts of the world, to give gifts to good people and punish the bad.

Fourth dimension in a movie creates an overall different experience. In addition to the effects of 3-D features, viewers can experience the movies through other senses like sight, sound, odour, touch and also have personal remote control. Viewers are seated in special seats which have bass shockers and other special fittings which make them a part of the complete 4-D experience.

  • WHAT IS BOW SHOCK?

In aerodynamics, bow shock is a normal shock that occurs in front of an object within a supersonic flow. Unlike an oblique shock, the bow shock is not attached to the tip, off the object in the flow. Oblique shock angles are limited in formation based on the corner angle and upstream Mach number. When these limitations are exceeded, a bow shock occurs instead of an oblique shock. Therefore, bow shocks are often seen forming around blunt objects. In astrophysics, bow shock is a boundary between a magnetosphere and an ambient medium. For stars, this is typically the boundary between their stellar wind and the interstellar medium. In a planetary magnetosphere, the bow shock is the boundary at which the solar wind abruptly drops because of its approach to the magnetopause.

  • WHAT IS DIES IRAE?

Dies Irae literally means day of wrath. The mediaeval Christians were preoccupied with the end of the world; they anticipated the Last Judgement, followed by the millennium. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the West there was a revival of the belief in the end of time. The year 1000 likewise excited mythological speculation, as did famines, plagues, and earthquakes. Most influential were the views of the visionary Joachim of Fiore. He divided history into several ages and said that 1260 would be the fulfilment of the Age of the Spirit, which had begun with St Benedict. At that time, mankind could expect a new revelation, the coming of the anti-Christ, and the last days of wrath. This myth, written down at the behest of the Papacy, exerted a potent influence on mediaeval thought, and in its vision of a future world where the Holy Roman Empire and the Church of Rome would give place to a free community of perfected beings who have no need of clergy or sacraments or scripture, it anticipated modern millennial theories.

The Boeing Company (BA) overcame market pessimism, showing hardiness in its core businesses with second quarter fiscal 2010 earnings of $1.06 per share, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.01. The company's results exhibit solid performance across its core businesses amid lower volumes.

However, the company, like its defense peer Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) fell short of year-ago earnings. Last year, Boeing reported earnings of $1.41 for the corresponding period.

The street was anxious of Boeing's ability to recover since its commercial airplane deliveries were badly affected by cancellation and deferment from customers absorbing the after-shocks of the worldwide recession. As a result, Boeing's quarterly revenue declined 9.2% year-over-year to $15.6 billion, lower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $16.4 billion.

Segmental Results

Commercial Airplane

Boeing's Commercial Airplane segment in the reported quarter saw a stark 9% drop in deliveries to 114 units. A lower number of 737 and 777 airplanes flew out of Boeing without a single 747 during the quarter.

As a result, Boeing's quarter revenue has dropped 12% to $7.4 billion. The segmental operating margin contracted to 9.2% from 9.7% in the year-ago quarter due to lower new airplane deliveries.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security

Boeing Defense, Space & Security segment witnessed an 8% drop in its quarterly revenue to $8 billion. This was due to lower volume in Network & Space Systems, in part offset by a favorable aircraft delivery mix. Boeing Military Aircraft (BMA) quarterly revenue rose 4% to $3.6 billion driven by higher Chinook deliveries and volume.

Network & Space Systems' revenue declined 24% to $2.4 billion, impacted by lower volume on the Brigade Combat Team Modernization and Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) programs. Global Services & Support (GS&S) revenue fell 3% to $2 billion on lower maintenance modifications and upgrades volume.

Overall segmental operating margin contracted to 8.9% from 10.1% in the year-ago quarter due to lower margins in military aircraft and services.

Boeing Capital Corporation

Boeing Capital Corporation (BCC) reported quarterly revenues of $162 million compared to $167 million in the year-ago quarter. The segment generated earnings of $55 million compared to $36 million in the year-ago period. During the quarter, BCC's portfolio balance declined to $5.3 billion, down from $5.7 billion at year end, on normal run-off, asset pre-payments and depreciation.

Financial Condition

Boeing ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $4.5 billion and short term investments of $5.6 billion. At year-end fiscal 2009, the company had $9.2 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $2 billion of short term investments. The company used $19 million of cash in operating activities in the first half of 2010, compared to $1.2 billion generated in the year-ago period. Long-term debt droppedd to $11.4 billion at the end of the quarter from $12.2 billion at the end of fiscal 2009.

Outlook

Boeing reaffirmed its fiscal 2010 revenue in the guidance range of $64 billion – $66 billion and EPS in the range of $3.50 – $3.80. The guidance range is based upon secure operating performance accompanied by lower volumes, higher pension expense and investment in development programs.

Commercial Airplane segment's 2010 delivery guidance range remains unchanged at 460 – 465 airplanes. Segmental 2010 revenue guidance range is reaffirmed at $31 billion – $32 billion. However, operating margin guidance range has been raised to 7.5% – 8.5%, up from 6.5% – 7.5% on expected effective operating performance.

Defense, Space & Security segment's revenue guidance range for 2010 is reaffirmed at $32 billion – $33 billion. However, the operating margin guidance was reduced to approximately 9.5%, from approximately 10%, reflecting soft performance to date and the current contracting environment.

We are currently Neutral on the Zacks #3 Rank stock.

Navy Vought
Navy Vought

The Navy F4U Corsair saw service in both World War II and the Korean War as a carrier-flown fighter plane, most notably in the Marianas and at Okinawa. It was one of the most famous planes to be developed during the war, and production lasted until 1952.

Prototypes of the plane were built in 1938 and 1939, and the production contract was awarded to Vought in June of 1941. The first carrier trials began on the USS Sangamon in late 1942. The design of the plane presented many challenges due to its high speed and the availability of new technology. Because of these problems, and because the simpler F6F Hellcat had already begun production, Corsairs did not find their way aboard U.S. aircraft carriers until 1944.

The F4U Corsair was designed to be the fastest fighter plane ever built. Using the largest engine available, the 2,000 horsepower 18-cylnder Pratt & Whitney engine helped the Navy F4U Corsair become the first U.S. fighter plane to fly faster than 400 miles per hour.

The F4U was a single-engine fighter plane with a range of 1,000 miles. It featured a relatively large three-blade propeller measuring over 13 feet in diameter, and was the first U.S. Navy plane to feature fully retractable landing gear. Measuring 33 feet 4 inches long and with a wingspan of 41 feet, the Navy F4U Corsair weighed 14,000 pounds when loaded. The Corsair's most unique feature was its "bent" wing, the result of a powerful engine and large propeller. The wing design lowered the overall height of the plane, gave the pilot improved visibility, and reduced drag.

The production F4U Corsair featured 6 wing-mounted.50 cal Browning heavy machine guns. Despite its new technology, the Corsair was also the last American fighter plane to use fabric skin on the top and bottom of each wing as well as for the ailerons, elevators, and rudder.

Despite its impressive performance, early Navy pilots to use the Corsair often termed it the "hog," "hosenose", or "bent wing widow-maker" due to the poor visibility over its long nose. However, opinions turned favorable after kamikaze attacks prompted more Corsairs to be moved to aircraft carriers. Known as one of the most formidable American fighter planes of its era, the U.S. Navy racked up an 11:1 kill ratio with the F4U Corsair. The F4U compared especially favorably to most Japanese aircraft, with a 12:1 kill ratio against Japanese planes. The Corsair dropped over 15,000 tons of bombs during the war, or 70 percent of the total bombs dropped by fighters. Although designated as a carrier fighter, more Corsairs were flown from land-based runways. By the end of the war, Corsairs could be found on Okinawa, in the Philippines, and elsewhere.

During the Korean War, the Navy F4U Corsair began to be replaced by the AU-1 Corsair and other models. Over 12,500 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought overall, in 16 different variants. Over two dozen U.S. Navy F4U Corsairs are believed to be still airworthy, and restored planes can be found in museums and other locations, mainly in the United States.

I have asked what is the top 10 best aircraft, give me the top(bottom) 10 aircraft, be inventive!?

This may be subjective, as the Airforce, Navy and Marines may have some very "different" ideas as to the WORST aircraft; tested, flown, in service,
Here is my number one aircraft
1.Vought F7U Cutlas, the "Gutless Cutlas". go from there..

Breda 88, Italian attacker-heavy fighter, when the prototype took off, it performed very good speed, agility....but when they armed(machine guns, ammunitions, and some bombs) it was hardly able to take off...

Baulton Paul Defiant, British fighter, was probably the most useless fighter of the WW2 because of the armament in turret. After few succesful missions because german pilot confused it for spitfires or hurricane and attacked it from behind, but then they started attacking it from the bottom. This fighters were soon retired from the first line.

these are the only that came into my mind at the moment...

Air Plane
Air Plane

In my experience, one of the most tedious aspects of travel is finding ways to pass the time on long flights. My solution? Simple, sleep your way through the boredom! Here are some of my favorite tricks to catch some zzz's at cruising altitude.

1) Bring your own pillow! This is probably the most important thing in my opinion. Your own pillow will not only be much more comfortable than the tiny airline pillows (that usually feel like they're stuffed with straw) but it can also give you that familiar feeling (and scent) of sleep that you are used to. This calming effect can help to offset some of the stress and anxiety you may feel when traveling and help you relax a little more.

The main thing to remember when bringing your own pillow is to make sure it's not too big to carry on-board with you.

2) Bring a portable music device with you. It can help a lot if you bring your Zune, iPod, or other personal music device along on your trip. Be sure to have some soothing tunes loaded up before you go and use them to drown out the oft-annoying ambient sounds associated with modern travel. While this won't block out the roar of twin-turbine jet engines firing up at takeoff, it can help you ignore that screaming three-year-old 12 rows back. A huge upgrade to this technique is to use noise-canceling headphones if you can. They're pricey, but if you travel a lot you will be glad you splurged on them.

3) Avoid the airport Starbucks before your flight! This is kinda obvious but still overlooked by lots of us. That Triple Grande Choco-Mocca with Vanilla Shot might sound really tempting but the resulting caffeine overdose (coupled with the frequent visits to the airplane restroom) will make it difficult to get your in-flight beauty rest. Fight the coffee urge until you reach your destination.

Hopefully these simple tips will help you in your quest for quiet solitude at 35,000 feet. Relying on familiar comforts and avoiding slumber-impeding substances can accomplish more than you might think. Here's to you sleeping through many flights to come!

I'm a long-time writer and webmaster finally making a living doing what I love. Check out my latest site on queen bed frames at http://queenbedframesonline.com

Where's the quietest place on an air plane in Economy class?

My family and I were choosing seats on the airplane and we were thinking of sitting in row 30 and 31, which is right beside the left wing on the Airbus 343.
My mom said it would be noisy, and she suggests sitting at the very back of the plane...

So, other than sitting in First and Business classes, where would be the quietest location on an air plane in Economy class?

I'm not sure where the quietest place is, there probably isn't one. But, it's safest to sit near the wings. Also, seats near the emergency exit are more comfortable because there is a lot more leg room.

Bleriot Airplane

First Flight Across the English Channel with the Bleriot XI Monoplane

Great Britain, always disconnected from the European continent because of its insularity, had only been reachable by sea until 1785, at which time the first balloon had successfully crossed the English Channel by air.  By 1908, 35 other aerial balloon crossings had been completed, but none had been made with heavier-than-air craft.  That had been about to change, and the feat would fully equal the many epic, record-breaking flights now firmly impressed in the annals of aviation history, such as the transcontinental flight made by Calbraith Rogers in 1911 with the Vin Fiz Flyer and the solo transatlantic crossing by Charles Lindbergh in 1927 with the Ryan Monoplane nicknamed Spirit of St. Louis.

Sparked by the London Daily Mail’s 500 British pound challenge issued on October 5, 1908, an amount later doubled, the event had sought “the person who shall succeed in flying across the English Channel from a point on English soil to a point on French soil, or vice-versa” in a heavier-than-air craft without stopping.

Although Wilbur and Orville Wright had been perceived as the only two capable of the feat, their involvement with aircraft sales-pursuing demonstrations had precluded their participation, despite a significantly increased prize offer, and Hubert Latham, who had spent two years in the French Army and had already successfully crossed the Channel in an aerial balloon, had been the first to accept the challenge.  Having already earned a French duration record and a world record for monoplanes for the one-hour, seven-minute, 37-second flight in his Antoinette IV on June 5, 1909, he had intended to make the crossing with this aircraft, taking off from cliffs at Sangatte, a village six miles from Calais, where he had set up a rudimentary camp.  French destroyers and crane-equipped tugboats would follow his course.

Count Charles de Lambert, a second contender and Wilbur Wright’s first student pilot in France, intended to make the journey with Wright aircraft, but of his two machines, one had been damaged during a test flight and the other had not been readied in time for the event.

Latham had suffered a similar fate.  Fighting strong winds during a July 13 crossing attempt, he had been forced to land in a corn patch, severing the right strut and wheel of his aircraft, while a second attempt, six days later, had resulted in an engine failure-caused water landing near the French destroyer following him.  The airplane, now too damaged for anything but a lengthy rebuild, had to be substituted by the Antoinette VII, although at least a week had been needed to prepare it for flight.

It had been at this time that a third contender, Louis Bleriot, had entered the race with his own design, the Bleriot XI, a smaller, though not dissimilar aircraft to the Antoinette.  Incorporating several features already introduced by his earlier aircraft and therefore representing the latest in a series of evolutions, it had sported a primarily open, box-frame fuselage; a small engine; fabric-covered, pylon-supported wings; wing-warping mechanisms; an open cockpit; the cloche method of actuating both the wing-warping and the elevators; and a tri-wheel undercarriage.

The rounded-tip wings, with an 8.53-meter span, a 1.83-meter chord, a 4.65 aspect ratio, and a 13.95-square-meter area, had been attached to the poplar fuselage, their trailing edges differentially warped to induce in-flight banking.  The 25-hp, three-cylinder, V-shaped, air-cooled Anzani engine, replacing the original seven-cylinder REP semi-radial, sported a 2.08-meter wooden propeller which produced 105 kilos of thrust at 1,450 revolutions-per-minute.

The horizontal tail, comprised of a fixed, center section with elevating tips, had been built round a steel tube bolted to the fuselage underside by cast aluminum fittings, while the rudder, positioned 13 inches behind it, extended above the fuselage.

The undercarriage had been comprised of two main, fixed wheels which swung on links to cater to cross-wind ground conditions and absorbed landing impacts by means of elastic springs, and a single, castering tail wheel.

First flying on January 23, 1909 at Issy, France, and covering a 200-meter distance, the Bleriot XI, with its characteristic forward bedstead frame built up of two ash horizontal beams, two vertical beams, and two vertical tubes to provide engine and landing gear mounts, took to the air for a second time the following month on February 18, with a two-square-meter larger wing.

Louis Bleriot himself had set up his camp on a farm at Les Barraques so that he could use its flat pasture as a runway.

On July 23, de Lambert became the third pilot to officially enter the race, but of the three, he had been impeded by his still-unprepared aircraft while the other two had been hindered by the weather.

Diminishing winds and clearing skies on July 25, however, indicated cross-Channel flight potential, and Bleriot, having already awakened early, warmed his engine by 0400, before making a 15-minute practice circuit and relanding.

As the sun triumphed over night 35 minutes later, Bleriot prepared himself to triumph over flight, climbing into the fabric-covered monoplane and throwing to the ground the crutches he had used to help him walk after a prior flight fuel tank explosion had burned his left foot.  “If I cannot walk, I will show the world I can fly!” he had proclaimed.

The sun inched above Calais Castle.

After oil had been added to the aircraft’s 25-hp engine and its 17-liter fuel tank had been topped off, Anzani, maker of the powerplant which bore his name, turned the wooden propeller and the five men holding the tail down released it when Bleriot had commanded, “Let’s go!”

Throttling into 1,200 revolutions-per-minute of power, Bleriot accelerated his airplane over the grass toward the sand and the open Channel, gateway to England and aeronautical history, pulling back on the cloche and separating its two still-spinning, bicycle-like wheels from French soil, as if they continued to ride some invisible, aerial track.

Surmounting the telegraph wires, the aircraft climbed to 180 feet, inching out over the water body which had generated the challenge.  Reducing power, it leveled off at 260 feet and maintained a 43-mph airspeed.

The French destroyer, Escopette, intended to provide flight following and carrying journalists and Bleriot’s wife, moved into view.  Seeing the propeller-pulled object in the sky amid the cylindrical sun’s ascent above the horizon, she yelled, “Mon Dieu!  There he is!”  as her husband gracefully passed overhead on fabric wings which had created a 260-foot-high aerial bridge between landmasses, creating the lift for which they had been designed.  But the speed, one-and-a-half times greater than that of the ship’s lumbering 26, had rendered it a far superior opponent and it quickly overtook it.

Attempting to make a wide circle in order to remain in sight, Bleriot quickly realized that his aircraft had been demonstrating its intrinsic speed and distance advantage over the water-plying vessel.  Its intended directional aid toward England, alas, could not be used.

Relaxing his grip on the cloche, Bleriot permitted the aircraft he himself had designed to find its own way across the water.

Completely disconnected from soil and soul after ten minutes aloft, with neither coast ahead nor coast behind visible, he felt “alone, unguided, without compass, in the air over the middle of the Channel.”

The wind had begun to regain its strength.  The 25-hp Anzani engine, apparently overheating from its continuous-power output, suddenly sputtered and the airplane nudged itself out of its artificial plateau toward the Channel’s waves and whitecaps.  Boring through a rainsquall, whose pelting douse of cool water ironically nourished the powerplant of its needs, the aircraft regained even, altitude-holdng power.

Wrestling with wind and fog, it fought its way to England.  A long gray line, rising above the horizon and representing its destination, appeared ahead, but it did not resemble Dover.  The southwest wind had diverted the frail bird to St. Margaret’s Bay instead, yet the Dover Lighthouse, rising prominently in the west, had marked the location of the castle, and Bleriot banked left toward it, penetrating strong headwinds and paralleling the coast at a one-mile distance.

Following the presumably harbor-approaching channel boats, Bleriot spotted reporter Charles Fontaine waiving the promised French tricolor to mark the entrance over Shakespeare Cliff of North Foreland Meadow, itself next to Dover Castle.

Completing a half-circle above the Channel, Bleriot initiated his approach to England—and history.  Threading its way between the gap and passing over land for the first time in more than half an hour, the aircraft banked to avoid red buildings on its right, but it had been clenched by the fist of low-level turbulence and winds, which had thrice spun it round, rendering it uncontrollable.  "At once, I stop my motor,” Bleriot had later stated, “and instantly my machine falls straight upon the land from a height of 65 feet.  In two or three seconds, I am safe upon your shore,” although the airplane’s propeller and landing gear had sustained damage.

Latham, still asleep on the continent which Bleriot had just bridged, did not fly at all that day and had to accept defeat.  Although he had made the attempt two days later, he had once again plunged into the Channel when his engine had failed and he had sustained injuries.

Because of the historical event, the Bleriot XI, which had been offered in training, sport, military, and racing versions with varying dimensions, wingspans, engines, horsepower ratings, and capacities, had attracted over 800 worldwide sales, having been the most massively produced pre-war monoplane.

Although the relatively short, 23-mile distance between Les Barraques in France and North Foreland Meadow in England had been covered in 36½ minutes, the flight’s effects had been disproportionally long.  For England, geographically protected and isolated by its surrounding Channel, its insularity had ended.  For France, it had bred the designer, aircraft, and pilot which had triumphed over that Channel.  And for the world, it had meant that the airplane, increasingly able to connect countries and continents, had paved the way toward unlimited future civil and military application.

What is the Worlds oldest flying airplane?

I just saw the 1909 Bleriot in Rhinebeck that's the oldest in the US but I want to know what is the oldest still flying. Not the oldest airplane, that would be the Wright Flyer.

The oldest in the world is another 1909 Bleriot, this one in England. It's only three weeks older than Old Rhinebeck's.
