Simulator Software for Professional Flight Training

Although some people think airplane simulator software is just a game, it has actually been used for professional flight training for quite some time. Along with a good flight training manual, the software can be used to train students and professionals alike. Since the functions of flight simulator software are so similar to the real thing, they provide excellent training to prepare pilots for controls and conditions before they have to face them in the skies. It used to be that the only way to teach a pilot to fly, say, a Boeing 747 was to give them books and hope they are ready once they get in the cockpit with an instructor. With flight simulator software, pilots will know what it is like to fly a specific type of plane before they actually do it, so they are always able to learn and move to the next step in their training much more safely. Not only is this effective for students, but also for seasoned pilots who want to learn a new type of plane or one which they are unfamiliar with. The great thing about flight simulator software is that is creates a virtual world that a flight training manual just can't do. While manuals and instructional information is necessary, it just doesn't create the kind of three-dimensional world containing various models of airplanes, destinations and weather conditions. Pilots and students can learn how to move in the new type of airplane, change the altitude, control the engines, initiate landing and fly gears, select wings and so much more. They are basically learning how to fly a specific type of plane before they actually do it. Flight simulators can provide more Boeing 747 information, or information on virtually any kind of plane, than you might imagine. Along with manuals and instruction, this is the best way to learn to fly a specific type of plane.

Remember, when you say Boeing you include McDonald-Douglas, Hughes and North American. Most if not all Commercial Boeing's are low wing. Most, but not all, Military Boeing's are high wing. Of course all their rotary wing aircraft are high wing.

The Navitimer wrist watch was launched by Breitling in 1952 and to this day has accumulated a worldwide following for both the newer and older models.

How did this particular model become so popular as to be worn by Raquel Welch as a skydiving spy in the film Fathom (1967) and by Sean Connery as James Bond in Thunderball (1965)? It all started in 1884 when Leon Breitling established a factory in the watchmaking town of Saint-Imier in the Swiss Jura mountains. Breitling at the time had the intention of turning out timepieces that would be equipped to perform functions well beyond merely imparting the time of day. To start with, he made pocket chronographs - event stopwatches for all kinds of occasions - and they were robust in their manufacture.

As World War I broke out Leon's son Gaston took over the running of the company. To meet wartime requirements, Breitling manufactured wristwatches with luminous dials and hands, and a chronograph mechanism. After Gaston's death, it wasn't until 1932 that his son Willy assumed control over the company. Not long after, Willy was overseeing the production of over forty chronograph models, as well as the first one with two buttons. By this time Breitling had identified the aviation industry as a major growth area. This notion was correct as it was confirmed with a large contract from Britain's Royal Air Force in 1936 for the supply of chronographs and cockpit clocks.

In 1952 when Breitling launched its Navitimer model, it was quickly adopted by the international Aircraft Owners' and Pilots' Association as its official timepiece. The Navitimer was favored for its chronograph timing in hours, minutes, and seconds, and also a slide rule around the outside of the face. This consisted of a mobile outer scale, engraved with numeric scales, actioned by rotating the bezel, for use with a fixed scale marked around the rim. Such a feature allowed pilots to make in-flight calculations to gauge how much fuel remained in relation to miles already travelled, or at what speed, related to the total journey time, the plane should be flying.

During this period in the 1950s, Breitling was also supplying cockpit clocks to aeroplane manufacturers such as Boeing, Douglas and Lockheed. At this time, the first civilian jet aircraft (De Havilland Comet) flew from London to Johannesburg with a Breitling clock on board for guidance.

Eventually, Breitling created a spacegoing version of the Navitimer, the Cosmonaute, which featured 24-hour markers because notions of day and night off the Earth were meaningless. This particular model was used by astronaut Scott Carpenter.

In 1969 Breitling released the first-ever automatic chronograph (the Calibre II, renamed to Calibre 12). This chronograph was the inspiration for the Navitimer Chrono-Matic. In 1976 an LED version of the Navitimer appeared, and this was eventually followed by an LCD model. Both are now collector's pieces.

Heathrow Airport, Europe's busiest international airport, is the most used gateway into the UK for many overseas visitors. Most are probably unaware that regional airports often offer lower cost flights.

It's hardly surprising that most people looking to fly into London and the south east of England assume that they are best flying into one of the major London airports, such as Heathrow or Gatwick.

Certainly Heathrow appears to have plenty to offer - namely a large selection of flights to choose from and proximity to central London (about 45 minutes to central London on the Underground last time I travelled the route).

Many travellers would be wise to consider the UK's regional airports instead of the large London hubs. Gatwick and Heathrow are both expensive airports for many airlines to use, meaning that low cost airlines often can't afford to run services from there.

This has meant that many of the low-cost airlines operate routes from Europe to lesser known airports, including Southampton, Bournemouth, Coventry and Doncaster.

Taking Southampton Airport as one example, it's clear to see that there are some real advantages to using this airport rather than Heathrow or Gatwick.

Budget airline Flybee operate from here, providing regular services to France, Ireland, the rest of the UK and much more of continental Europe. Southampton Airport has its own dedicated railway station, allowing a travelling time into Central London of little more than an hour and a quarter.

Since the airport is smaller than the London airports, the extra time spent travelling from Southampton to London is often saved because you'll spent less time at baggage reclaim, passport control and customs.

A final bonus is for those flying into the UK to spend time in the south east or south west of England. By choosing a Flybee flight to Southampton, for example, you can actually land closer to your final destination.

I am flying on Continental Airlines, on 12/19, and 12/23, both on Embraer 145's, and they added more flights that are open on the same days. Would I be able to switch times on the same day, so I can be on Boeing 737, without having to pay a fee?

Is the Airline Industry Collapsing?

At least one American airline company goes bankrupt every week due to the raised price of fuel, the viability of commercial air traffic thusly being put under question. Low cost European companies like EasyJet and Ryanair are affected as well.

According to data provided by ATA (US Air Transport Association) six airline companies closed since the beginning of April and the seventh was put under protection of article 11 from the law on bankruptcy.

Since the beginning of the year 25 airline companies had to call off their flights, “exclusively because of the costs”, according to an ATA official. The rising of oil price at the international stock markets made the price of kerosene rise in the last 12 months by 65%. Eos, a company that provides transatlantic flights with business class only started bankruptcy procedures on April 26th.

Maxjet, the direct competitor of Eos had ceased its activity four months before Eos. Aloha Airlines left the market on 31st March after 60 years of existence. Analysts consider that 20% of the American internal flights should be discontinued. Considering the price of $135/barrel, a transatlantic flight of an Boeing 767 costs $80 000, compared to $57 800 last year.

These kind of problems are faced not only by companies in the USA, but all over the world. “In the last six months we suspended 25 airline companies from the financial compensation system, the most important intentness of this kind in the system’s history” according to Anthony Concil, IATA’s spokesman.

To prevent financial problems, IATA, who incorporates 240 airline companies, created a compensating system among most of its members, allowing its customer’s protection, especially in cases of insolvency. Thus, when a client is purchasing a flying ticket from a travel agency, the agency is paying the money to IATA, who pays the airline company that takes the customer. If there are serious financial problems, the company is suspended from the system, to grant a possible repayment to the clients.

A similar precedent record occurred right after 11th September when 8 airline companies were excluded from IATA, among which Swissair, the Belgian airline company Sabena or Ansett, an Australian airline company.

Another company confronting with this financial problem generated by oil price is the American Low Cost company Skybus Airlines, founded in 2004 with its headquarters in Ohio. The airline company started bankruptcy procedures in April this year. The low cost company couldn’t overcome the “combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment”, announced the company.

In the same week another two companies went bankrupt, ATA Airlines and Aloha Airlines. ATA is an Indian low cost charter air line, ‘filed for Chapter 11 status Wednesday as a result of financial problems’ following the loss of a key contract for our military charter business," the company said (CNN).

The increased price of fuel can and will have severe effects not only on small airline companies, but on the whole industry. Left without money, small airline companies are risking not only restructuring, but bankruptcy as well. 6 500 United Airlines pilots were informed last month that 950 of them will be let out by the end of 2009. This measure is part of a restructuring plan of the company, who intends to reduce it’s fleet by 100 airplanes to overcome the high price of fuel.

United Airlines is not the only company in this situation. Since the end of May four large American airline companies, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines and US Airways Group, will fire around 10 000 employees. Air Canada declared as well that 2 000 employees will be fired because the kerosene used in flights will be more expensive by $1 billion in 2008 than in 2007.

Regional Airlines. Skywest/Chautququa=United Express, Delta Connections, etc? Please Explain?

Please help me understand how Skywest Airlines and Chautauqua Airlines are also United Express, Delta Connections, etc.? Which one is better? If I wanted to fly for Express/Connections would I interview through Skywest/Chautauqua or Delta/United. I don't get it. Are the salaries the same for all of them? If so, what are the salaries.
Also, when you get hired by an airline, do you get to choose Boeing vs Airbus, or at least a preference?
And lastley, if I went to college and while in college got my Commercial twin engine instrument, what jet training school should I go to?

They are all pretty much the same. Delta and United's regional both operate with Sky west. Chautauqua Airlines is an airline based in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
