Asthma and Air Purifiers

Asthma is a disease that consists of two main components. These components are constriction and inflammation, both of which occur in the lung passageways. Constriction is when the airways narrow because muscles tighten around them and inflammation is when the airways get irritated and start to swell. When both of these actions occur together, they cause the symptoms of asthma such as difficulty breathing and swelling of the lungs. A person experiencing an asthmatic attack has difficulty catching his or her breath and is usually coughing or wheezing in order to try to breathe.

Asthmatic attacks can occur at any time. Some can be severe and some can simply seem like a shortness of breath. Due to this characteristic of the disease, some people are still unaware that they have asthma and need to treat it. If asthma goes untreated, a person may experience a decrease in lung function. The disease makes a person's lungs work harder and without help or treatment from an outside source, a person suffering from asthma will have weaker lungs. Air Purifiers can help.

There are many contaminants in the air that can be asthma triggers. Some of the contaminants include pet dander, allergens, pollen, dust or chemicals. When these substances are breathed in, asthmatics are sometimes affected and can experience difficulty breathing. An asthmatic affected by seasonal allergies may also find that response to the allergies can lead to an asthmatic attack. The toxins found in indoor air can easily be filtered out of the air indoors with an air purifier.

There are simple things that can be done to prevent asthmatic attacks such as keeping pets outside, not smoking tobacco products in the home or dusting all furniture as much as possible. However, air purifiers are proven to be the most effective way to keep indoor air clean and safe. Most air purifiers are proven to remove 99.7% of all particles found in indoor air. Chemical fumes, tobacco smoke and dust can be absorbed into the filter of an air purifier. With these contaminants no longer present in the air, the probability of an asthma attack is very low for the sufferer.

The High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters, or HEPA filters, that are used in air purifiers are effective in absorbing most toxins in indoor air that can be related to asthma attacks. They are able to remove 99.7% of all particles that are 0.03 microns and larger. These particles can include pollen and dust particles, which are the main cause of asthma attacks among sufferers. If indoor air pollutants are not removed from the air, they can circulate an indoor room with no escape. The pollutants are then breathed in and can cause a severe or minor asthmatic attack. With an air purifier, these particles and pollutants are absorbed and cannot be circulated throughout the air.

What is a 'HEPA' filter?

A 'HEPA' filter is a kind of mechanical filter that means it's a " high-efficiency particulate air" filter. HEPA was invented during World War II to prevent the escape of radioactive particles from laboratories. To qualify as a true HEPA filter, it must be able to capture at least 99.97% percent of all particles 0.3 microns in diameter, or larger, that enter it.

In a 1990 review of indoor air pollutants, published by The American Thoracic Society, it was stated that air purifiers containing the HEPA filter are able to remove a significant amount of particles from indoor air, making the air cleaner and safer to breathe. Asthmatics who use an air purifier in their home are less likely to have an asthma attack since the pollutants that trigger the attacks are no longer present in the indoor air they are breathing.

There is no known cure for asthma and people diagnosed with the disease will have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. However, with the help of air purifiers, people are finding their asthma attacks are becoming a scarce occurrence instead of a daily struggle. By eliminating particles in the air that trigger attacks, air purifiers are helping people with asthma to cope with their daily lives. Asthma may be an uncomfortable disease but people are finding relief in the use of air purifiers.

Ozone generators [not recommended - these types of "filters" are not reliable since their ozone levels usually exceed acceptable levels]. Although ozone technically clears the air of some particles, most groups do not recommend these. (Note: these are not ion-type filters; see "Electronic Filters" above.) These devices all exceed the acceptable level for ozone.

Both the patient and the doctor often don't recognize an ovarian cancer warning sign until the cancer is in the advanced stage.

Often once the cancer is identified; it will have already spread throughout the body and occurs in 70-75% of patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Recent studies have proven that ovarian cancer indicators aren't as entirely undetectable as originally thought.

There are some typical warning signs of cancer of ovaries that women should be familiar with.

The issue with ovarian cancer warning signs is the fact that they can resemble the symptoms of other common ailments that aren't linked to cancer. This is why it can take awhile for a doctor to determine if a physical symptom is actually linked to ovaries.

It is unknown what percentage of starting stage actually results in symptoms that are detectable. This means it is difficult to determine if women actually had symptoms before the cancer started spreading. The good news is that 90% of women who are diagnosed with Stage 1 ovarian cancer are those who went to their doctors before diagnosis.

Often the warning signs associated with this cancer are nonspecific and can be mistaken for other illnesses. For example, urinary problems and fatigue aren't sure signs of cancer because they can be a signal of many different ailments.

This is why many health care professionals are apprehensive to publish the symptoms associated with ovarian cancer since there is the chance to people will misdiagnose themselves because of the commonality of the symptoms and other health conditions.

However, it is important to educate yourself about various women specific illnesses since knowing the signs can save your life if you are diagnosed in the early stages of the cancer.

If you are aware of the signs associated with ovarian cancer, you can at least be aware of the risk of having it when symptoms start to show up.

Take a look at some of the major warning signs linked to ovarian cancer:

o Abdominal swelling/bloating

o Back pain

o Difficulty breathing

o Fever

o Fatigue

o Gastrointestinal problems

o Inexplicable weight gain/loss

o Loss of appetite

o Pain or pressure in the abdomen/pelvis or during sex

o Urinary problems

o Vaginal discharge or bleeding

Of all the symptoms linked to ovarian cancer, abdominal pain not linked to diarrhea or nausea and lasts over two weeks is the most common sign. This symptom is present in 22% of cases while 18% of cases have urinary problems that continue to get worse.

Less than a fourth of women with this ilness have gynecological symptoms. This is why most doctors don't first consider cancer diagnosis when patients complain of symptoms. In many cases symptoms are similar to gastrointestinal or urinary tract problem.

If you experience any of the symptoms listed above it is a good idea to talk with your doctor when the symptoms last over two to three weeks.

Ovarian cancer warning signs must be recognized as soon as possible but you have to know that Knife Is Not Your Only Option, Chemo Is Not The Best Treatment.

Important Flight Information

Please note that all the information listed below is part of our standard operating procedure. However, weather conditions may force us to change flight altitudes or routing.

Please arrive 20 minutes before your departure time to complete tickets and receive a safety briefing. If you arrive late for your booking we will do our best to accommodate you immediately but reserve the right to postpone your flight until the next available time slot.

You are Welcome to take pictures or film during the flight.

If you have a pair of sunglasses or a cap, bring them along.

The temperature as a standard drops by 1.98 degrees celcious every 1000 ft. We suggest a jacket if you are flying in the winter months (June – August).  Summer should be just perfect.

Standard Cruise Altitude for our peninsula tours is 2 500ft or 762 meters (weather depending).

We are no longer allowed to fly over the top of Table Mountain as it is has been designated as part of a national park and is a protected area.
SECURITY REQUIREMENTS

Clients are required by Civil Aviation Regulation to sign a ticket before they fly; and to pay attention to the safety briefing given by NAC Makana staff before take-off.

NAC Makana does not carry dangerous goods of any class.  If you are not sure please refer to the chart located at the front desk or check with one of our staff members.

For weight and balance calculations please advise NAC Makana in advance should one of the passengers weigh in excess of 100 Kilograms.

If at anytime a passenger becomes a danger to him/herself or other passengers, is under the influence of alcohol or displays unruly behaviour that person shall not be allowed to board the aircraft and will be asked to leave the premises immediately.

What should a tech- savey "nerd' get for christmas?

i am 13 and my uncle asked me what I wanted for chrsitmas. My uncle always buys us something and I feel greatful for him. I don't want to ask like anything that costs alot, as I don't want my Christmas to be like the splurge last year. (me and my 3 brothers,all in the 6-15 range got a 360, a wii, 5 games, and 4 controleers for the 360 with some cheap toys) and don't anything over the $200 range. So what should I get. A Helicopter battle set? Please help.
