They are personally made by independent artisans. They are stylish and overflowing with uniqueness. A handmade rag doll, for instance, is usually made from scrap pieces of cloth. It is often stuffed with wire and fiber fill. At times, it is stuffed with cotton or small pieces of cloth. Even so, a handmade rag doll is still more beautiful than any of the mass-produced dolls. This is because the artisan who made it has ensured that it will not look like any other doll. It was also carefully handcrafted, so you can be sure that its quality is good. In fact, the dresses and other apparel of handmade rag dolls are personally sewn by artisans. Pretty buttons and ribbons are also often included.
Conversely, a hand-loomed puppet can be made from wood, paper, or old socks. Almost all children like to see puppet shows. We are building model cars in physics using gears. It has to pass a speed test AND a weight-pulling test. Any?
We have a ton of gears (15, 45, and 75 tooth), and a motor powered by a 9V battery. We have to make it go a minimum speed, and a pull a minimum weight. At the moment we cant even get it to put itself. =( Any ideas?
My brother suggested a makeshift transmission by sliding axels around, anyone know how I would do that?
Finally, we also, when we decorate the car, have to add features (sunroof, headlights, side mirrors, etc. etc.) Anyone have any cool features that would be cool to have, but would be easy to put on a model car? (Keep in mind thsi is a model car made from styrofoam or balsa wood, not plastic, and everything would be handmade, or something easily found at home)
Thanks!
To start a little terminology. The gear with the smallest number of teeth that is attached to the motor is called the pinion gear. The larger gears will be referred to as spur gears. A gear ratio is expressed as the number of turns of the pinion (or driving gear) per single revolution of the driven gear. For example, assuming the 15 tooth gear is the pinion and you drive the 45 tooth gear with it, the gear ratio will be 3 to 1 (found by dividing the number of teeth on the spur gear by the number on the pinion). A 3 to 1 gear ratio multiplies the torque of the motor by 3 (ignoring losses from friction). To understand why this works lets look at the work formula, Work = Force x Distance. Increasing the distance a pinion travels (by adding teeth to the spur gear) decreases the force needed to do a given amount of work. Or thought of another way for a given torque (rotational force of the motor) tripling the distance the force acts on, triples the torque on the spur gears axle and work that can be done (again ignoring friction). This is a good thing because your motor has low torque but moves very fast. Making the pinion travel a long distance to rotate the spur gear trades off this speed for more torque. I'm assuming that you have tried the 75 tooth gear driven by the motors pinion and it still doesn't have enough power to move the car. In this case you will have to make a compound gear system. To do this you will need two pinion gears and two axles. Attach a 45 tooth and a 15 tooth gear to one axle and mount the motor so it's pinion drives the 45 tooth gear. Then mount the second axle ( this one will have the wheels on it) with a 75 tooth gear on it so that it is driven by the pinion on the first axle. This will give you a torque approxamately that of the product of the two gear ratios 3 to 1 (45/15) and 5 to 1 (75/15) or a 15 to one ratio. This should move the minimum weight easily but may be too slow for the minimum speed. If so try replacing the 75 tooth gear with another 45 tooth gear giving a final ratio of 9 to 1. I hope this helps you get a good grade and hopfully learn something useful. Also a few more details on what you have tried so far would help me come up with more specific suggestions. As for decorations how about making zoomie style headers out of elbow macaroni?
