Airlines’ Plans Huge Boost For Isle Tourism

At a time when many U.S. airlines are cutting back capacity to Mainland destinations, carriers plan to increase flights to Hawai'i.

During the past several months, half a dozen airlines serving Hawai'i have announced that they are adding about 60 regularly scheduled flights a week to the Islands, some from markets as far away as Charlotte, N.C., and Detroit.

According to a recent study by the Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau, the nation's airline industry plans to add more than 497,000 more passenger seats to Hawai'i in 2010. The additional capacity represents about a month's worth of airline capacity, said HVCB CEO John Monahan.

The increase is good news for the local travel industry, which saw a 15 percent decline in capacity after last year's twin shutdowns of Aloha Airlines and ATA Airlines, the global financial crisis and soaring fuel prices.

“The amount of new service started this year or that has been announced for next year is huge,” said state Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert.

“That tells you that the airlines have confidence in Hawai'i as a destination.”

Hawaiian Airlines is adding the most capacity with the delivery of its new, long-range Airbus A330-200 aircraft in April.

The state's largest airline plans to add 21 weekly flights, including daily flights to Maui from Oakland, Calif. and San Diego as well as a daily Los Angeles-to-Honolulu flight.

The new Airbus jets are part of the local carrier's plan to spend as much as $4.4 billion over 15 years to acquire up to 24 new long-range aircraft.

Over the longer term, Hawaiian's new Airbus jets gives it the capability to fly direct flights out of New York and other Atlantic coast cities, making it easier to market Hawai'i tourism to new East Coast markets, said David Uchiyama, marketing director for the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

UPGRADES IN EAST

U.S. Airways has already started up its own East Coast connection.

The Phoenix-based airline last week launched daily nonstop service from Charlotte, N.C., augmenting the company's existing Hawai'i service from its Phoenix hub.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines has said it will resume direct flights to Honolulu from Detroit starting in June.

The Atlanta-based carrier, which stopped flying directly from Detroit in 2004, will operate three flights a week from the Motor City, which will make it easier for travelers from the Eastern seaboard to travel to the Isles.

To be sure, most of the growth will come from West Coast markets, especially those once served by Aloha and ATA.

CAPACITY STILL OFF

Alaska Airlines, which only began daily flights to Hawai'i two years ago, said it plans to add 14 flights a week to the Islands from California, making Hawai'i one of the airline's largest markets. Last month, the carrier began flying direct flights to Kona from a former Aloha and ATA stronghold, Oakland, Calif.

As a result of the expansion, about 11 percent of the carrier's capacity will serve the Hawai'i market.

Continental Airlines plans to beef up service from other former Aloha and ATA routes. Starting in March, the airline said it plans to fly four times a week to Maui from Orange County, Calif.

It also plans to increase the frequency of its Orange County to Honolulu flights from four days a week to seven days a week.

David Carey, CEO of Outrigger Enterprises Inc., estimates that the overall airline capacity is still off about 5.5 percent from its pre-Aloha and ATA days. But he said that's much better than other Mainland markets where airlines have cut back as much as 20 to 30 percent.

“We're still still down several percent but anything showing positive growth going forward is good news,” he said.

ONLY NEWS WAS BAD

The increased passenger lift represents a sharp reversal from early 2008 when Hawai'i's travel industry was struggling to persuade Mainland carriers to help fill the void created by the shutdowns of Aloha and ATA.

Many of the carriers were reluctant to increase capacity due to soaring fuel prices and the global economic meltdown.

What's more, some eastbound carriers such as Korean Air Lines had planned to expand their service to Hawai'i but later reconsidered after bookings tailed off as a result of fears of the H1N1 flu.

“It was one thing after another. First you get hit with fallout from the airlines, then it was the jump in oil prices, then you get hit with the financial crisis and then the H1N1 fears,” Uchiyama said.

Coronado is a San Diego Island Treat

If there is one place where Southern California charm, history, style, beaches and sun all converge, it has to be on the 7.4 square miles of ground you'll find at the west end of the sweeping, skyscraper-high Coronado Bridge. The makers of the movie "Some like it Hot" were certainly onto something when Coronado Island was selected for that movie's locale. Overlooking the Coronado beach

Just 2.3 miles across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado Island is an island retreat in every sense you can imagine - it's still relatively quiet, studded with swaying palm trees, blessed with some of the best beaches in California, and adorned by some of the most magnificent and historic buildings in San Diego County.

But lest you think this sounds like a great place to live as well, be assured that the price of admission will keep out all but the most well-heeled - unless of course you're willing to live on bread and water while you make mortgage payments so high they each could buy a late-model car.

But that's why it's so fun to visit Coronado. It's like appearing in your own episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," if only for a few days at a time. Stroll through the famous Hotel del Coronado and marvel at fine jewelry and designer clothing, or visit the fashionable downtown boutiques and trendy restaurants. Sit at an outdoor caf?nd people-watch to your heart's content, carefully distinguishing between the everyday tourists and the tony CEO's, families in tow, everybody stylized to the hilt.

No question, the grand dame of Coronado is the Hotel del Coronado and this island's life simply revolves around that property. No one comes to the island without paying homage to the hotel, meandering through its bars and lobbies and garden pathways and then stepping out onto one of the broadest beaches in all of California. There are constant reminders that, yes, this was the filming location for "Some like it Hot" and, yes, Marilyn Monroe once stood right where you are standing. Even some of Ms. Monroe's more tasteful pin-up photos are displayed at the hotel's entrance.

But surprisingly, the "Hotel del" as locals Hotel del Coronado entrace call it, is not the only game in town and, whether because of price or a desire not to be staying smack in the middle of all the activity, many visitors opt for one of several other lodging options on the island. Our stay at the Glorietta Bay Inn was quite a different experience from the Hotel del, even though the grand dame is located right across the street.

Staying at the Glorietta Bay Inn was an opportunity to experience a historic San Diego mansion - the one that was built by John Dietrich Spreckels, a figure well-known in the city as someone who played a key role in developing San Diego during the late 1800's and after the turn of the century. He bought the utility company, street car system, water company and eventually he controlled even the Hotel del Coronado. Visitors to San Diego's Balboa Park will recognize the name from the famous Spreckels Pavilion, where visitors attend concerts given on the very organ Spreckels gave to the park when it was opened during the 1915 Pan-American Exposition.

The mansion itself is an impressive piece of architecture - Italian Renaissance style, all white, multi-story with dramatic lines. Inside, the wide marble staircase was our pathway to Room 126 - the Albright Room, a spacious second-floor with an open, airy feel and views to the yacht harbor, the Coronado Bridge and, in the distance, the mountains east of San Diego. Decorated in a French Country motif, the room featured flowers, tasteful paintings and floral bed quilts with matching drapes. Almost the size of a suite, this room was furnished with classic furniture reproductions befitting the era in which the house was built.

Downstairs, the Glorietta Bay Inn features a music room, with grand piano, in which guests can enjoy their complimentary breakfast of pastries, cereal, breads and juices. There are other areas, as well, that are quiet pleasant to sit in and enjoy the inn's colorful surroundings. The inn is quick to put a visitor in just the right mood to enjoy the island's many amenities and natural attractions.

The Glorietta Bay Inn is conveniently located just across the street from the beach and, if a California beach vacation is what you're after, this is one of the best places to find it. If you follow Orange Avenue just a few steps east, there is the downtown business area. The road curves ever-so-gently through the business district, Hotel Del Coronado as seen from the beachnever seeming too urban or commercial because the avenue is bisected by a wide lawn. Mature palm trees grace both sides of the thoroughfare giving a natural feeling to what otherwise might be just an ordinary business district. Of course there's nothing ordinary about the many historic buildings along meandering Orange Avenue.

The visitor notices an interesting mix of businesses downtown - exclusive upscale boutiques and fine jewelry stores are side-by-side with surf shops and tourist tee-shirt stores. Over at Beach Grill and Deli, local island style is conveyed through porcelain statue-like creation that has the menu on a surfboard, and a 50's roller-skating carhop pointing the way. Next door, the Moo-Time Creamery has the same sort of curiosities, in this case fashioned after Elvis and a cow. But just across the street is a store with a zillion-dollar assortment of jewels even Robin Leach would be hard-pressed to afford.

Restaurants are plentiful, although a word to the wise about a place we visited called Miguel's. Apparently the word is out that this is good Mexican food because we showed up at 7 p.m Thursday to find a one-hour wait time before we could even be seated. We toughed it out and the food was good - but we're not sure it was that good.

If you're driving to the island - and most people do, whether they have a rental car or they drove in from someplace in California - it's well worth exploring the entire island. The Silver Strand beach area goes on for miles. The east side of the island is the ferry landing area where there is a shopping center, restaurants and a quick boat ride to downtown San Diego.

It's also fun to look at the beautiful homes. Truth be told, many of the homes are nothing special - except in price. Ordinary, average, no-view two- and three-bedroom homes sell easily in the millions. There may be nice condos for under a million dollars but the really good ones with the views are well above that. Even those with mansions back in the Midwest could not sell them for enough money to buy more than a fixer-upper on this island.

Even if you don't have a car, there are many other ways to explore Coronado. For example, Coronado Pedicab Tours offers 30 and Coronado Pier 60-minute tours to view all of the island sights. Another option is a "vintage motor tour" that takes guests around Coronado in a 1965 Volkswagen Microbus. Of, if you want some exercise, there are several walking tours including one that leaves right from the Glorietta Bay Inn and focuses on all of the local historic areas.

The island includes many attractions. For example, the Museum of History and Art showcases the island's early history, with special attention given to the military bases that have called the island home. Theater is a big part of the local entertainment scene and visitors can enjoy performances at the Coronado Community Theater and the Lamb's Player's Theatre. Art-lovers will enjoy the Art-in-the-park exhibition put on the first and third Sundays of each month.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Coronado Island is part of San Diego and is easily reached by taking a toll-free bridge just south of downtown. Many people consider a stay on the island the ultimate Southern California vacation.

WHAT: An island retreat that has the best that California has to offer.

WHEN: San Diego weather is the best in the country and you can expect moderate temperatures year-round.

WHY: A chance to experience another way of life while soaking up that California sunshine and local culture. Those looking for the ultimate in California beach vacations will find that the beach near Hotel del is rated the best in all of California.

How To Travel With Your Dog

Guide to Dog Travel

Taking your four footed best friend along to Hawaii? At least you can expect how long you will be flying the skies. The advance knowledge prepares you and your pooch for the long travel ahead in comfort and in style. You both land on your destination happily together. For those traveling with their pet dogs for the first time, there are a lot of travel requirements and policies to follow. Mind you, these airline policies can change in a year or two. You can get all the relevant information online and narrow down your choices.

Before Flying

Before booking a flight, inform the airline that you are traveling with your pet. With JetBlue, you get double reward points when you take along your Crumpet. However, different airlines have different requirements. So before getting a ticket, know the regulations - you wouldn't want to leave poor Crumpet behind. The pet-friendly airline like JetBlue will allow two more dogs aside from Crumpet. But you cannot take Poochie, and Smarty along. The airline policy is one customer to one pet.

Air travel with your pet entails separation for the duration of the travel. As always air travel is not a comfortable experience for a pet used to much freedom of movement. To be inside a kennel will require discipline from both your dog and you. However, in all airlines, you have to be assured that all pets are treated with care.

Pet-sitting Airlines

American Airlines places a restriction on the number of pets on board. So it will be your gentler Crumpet who can go along with you. At least, American Airlines will give her the best customer service alongside with you. In Air Canada, your pet can stay with you unless he fits into a kennel that can be placed under your seat. Some airlines will have a restriction on the weight of the dogs, not more than 5 kg. and they must be placed inside vented bags again, under your seat. This is to ensure the comfort of other passengers.

In United Airlines, Crumpet can be in the cabin with you (she goes as a checked baggage) or she may take a flight as unaccompanied cargo. However, like all other planes she has to stay put in the kennel throughout the flight, which may be distressing for a time. If Crumpet should go as checked baggage, she will be submitted to the checked-in counter. You get to see her at the claim area in your final stop.

Certificates and Quarantines

If you are crossing borders, a certificate from the USDA issued within 30 days before travel must be acquired. So get those viral shots. Again, pets less than 8 weeks and are in poor health are not allowed to travel. It would be a waste of time getting all those tickets for you and your family, to find out later that little Crumpet cannot come along. To be sure that all will end well, get the medical and rabies certificates. Remember that the different airline require different periods for the heath certificates. Make inquiries at the embassies of your country of destination to prevent travel glitches for Crumpet. Do this four weeks before the travel date.

Since you are going to Hawaii, you have to quarantine Crumpet for 120 days - that is 4 months! Well, don't despair. If other requirements are met, the quarantine period can be reduced. Crumpet must be rabies free, must pass the most recent OIE-FAVN blood test-this will qualify him for the 5 day or less program release. So at this point, even if you are not traveling anywhere near Stockholm, it would pay if you take care of these details regularly. So when the time comes, Crumpet will be ready.

If Crumpet qualifies for the 5-day less program, you have to leave her behind. When the time comes to get her, you cannot release her from the kennel, until you get into cab. Surely, Crumpet would be raring to get out of the airport kennel. But if it happens that your trip will entail a non-stop flight to Maui or Kauai, Crumpet cannot go with you. Pets are not allowed on non-stop flights. If Crumpet is pregnant and nearing her time, she will not be allowed to get on board too. This policy is for pet safety.

Other Issues to Look Into

Aside from the medical certificates and varied airline limitations, you have to determine the time of year you are going to Hawaii or any other vacation spot outside the country. The airline system kinda confuses me... Hawaiian Airlines only goes to Hawaii, so is that the only airline that goes to Hawaii? And if it's not, then why would anyone fly on the Hawaiian Airlines if they could fly on another airline and reap the frequent flier miles? Thanks

As for why people would fly Hawaiian Airlines, they do partner up with many of the regular airlines such as United, Delta, American. Sometimes people will fly with them because the price is better or the airline has a better departure/arrival time.

You can not transfer your points into another person's (including anyone else in your family) membership account, but you can use your points to buy a plane ticket for someone else. You also can not combine points from two accounts to buy a plane ticket, all the points must come from one account.
