Notebook systems have grown in popularity, especially for one-computer families. Their increasing performance and portability make them attractive options for people who travel, work at home, or would just like their kids to be able to watch movies on road trips. Size and Weight

Size and weight are important when choosing a notebook. “Ultra-portables” offer light weight and very slim sizes, but sometimes require external optical drives. “Desktop replacements” have equivalent power to desktop systems, but they are heavier and bulkier, making them difficult to travel with. Large screens can be easy to work with at home, but can be cumbersome while on an airplane. When shopping for a laptop, make sure to pick up the computer. Processors ( CPU )

To determine the right CPU to buy, consider what you are using the computer for. If primarily used to browse the web, email, run a word processor, and play DVDs, any CPU above 1GHz will be sufficient.

Memory ( RAM )

Compared to desktop systems, laptop computers are generally more restricted in the amount of memory they can have. How long it will take when we all have PERSONAL AEROPLANES parked in our garages?

Since 1980, Personal Computers (PC) nearly took 20 years to take hold of our desktops. How long it will take when we have Personal Aeroplanes (PA) instead of cars.

What is the Ram Air Turbine(RAT) in aircraft? When and what is it used for?

I saw a photo of a Boeing 777-300 going around with the RAT deployed. Can anyone please tell me why it is required during a go around?

A main generator and or an APU failure could trigger an "auto deploy" on that aircraft. If the aircraft is in air mode but really on the ground an external power failure could do it too. Look out because it is not small! :0

A ram air turbine (RAT) is a small propeller and connected hydraulic pump, or electrical generator used as an emergency power source for aircraft. In case of the loss of both primary and auxiliary power sources the RAT will power vital systems (flight controls, linked hydraulics and also flight-critical instrumentation). Some RATs produce only hydraulic power, that is then used to power electrical generators.

Modern aircraft generate power through the main engines or an additional fuel-burning turbine called an auxiliary power unit, which is often a small tail-mounted turbine engine. The RAT generates power from the airstream due to the speed of the aircraft, and if aircraft speeds are low the RAT will produce less power. In normal conditions the RAT is retracted into the fuselage (or wing), deploying automatically in emergency power loss. In the time between power loss and RAT deployment, batteries are used.

Some manufacturers call them ADG"s (Air Driven Generators), and some run a reverse system called a HMG (hydraulic motor generator) which has a similar function but achieves it in a different way. Sorry wiki didn't have an article about that maybe I will write one!

In a controlled field, the local controller may instruct the pilot to go around if there is an aircraft, vehicle or object on the runway or some other unsafe condition. In both controlled and uncontrolled fields, the pilot in command may decide to go around at any time, for example if the aircraft is not lined up or configured properly for a safe landing; an aircraft, vehicle or other object has not cleared the runway; no landing clearance was received (in a controlled field); the landing gear is not properly extended; a dangerous meteorological condition is experienced on final approach (e.g. poor visibility, excessive cross-winds, etc.); or some other unsafe condition is detected.

Flights conducted under instrument flight rules, including all airline traffic, refer to "executing the missed approach" rather than going around. The maneuver itself is the same, but the pilot instead follows a pre-defined navigational "missed approach" sequence, published on the approach chart, instead of entering a circuit or pattern. Absent further instructions from the controller, a missed approach sequence directs an aircraft around traffic patterns and terrain into a safe place to begin a holding pattern.

Printing onto canvas using inkjet technology, now known as giclee, is a relatively new process. Giclee printing uses spinning nozzles which rapidly spray minute particles of vivid, archival inks directly onto the canvas. The system produces amazingly detailed, vibrant images directly from digital photos.

Until recently, the choice of canvas media on available on the market was small. High quality inkjet coatings were still in their infancy, and didn't provide the full range of colour and high levels of whiteness they do today.

The whiteness of the inkjet coating is very important, as it will affect how bright and 'true' the colour rendition of your photo canvas will be. Canvas with a high whitness, or white point will have optical brightening chemicals added to its coating to provide a whiteness similar to a sheet of good quality office paper. Other canvasses may look cream by comparison, sometimes leading to dull colour rendition.

Historical Soc

In 2008 the mountain town of Ruidoso, North East of the White Sands Missile Range, never expected to get hit by a storm that was a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico just a couple days before. This is the town were Smokey The Bear had been rescued from one of the worst wild fires ever. Their biggest worry usually is forest fire.

I watched T.V. as Hurricane Dolly traveled from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the mountains just east of where I live in New Mexico. In a matter of just a few hours Dolly dumped so much rain on Ruidoso, the river running through the middle of the town flooded with no warning. It took out bridges, camp grounds and trailer parks. People camping in the local camp grounds were awakened in the middle of the night and told to grab what they could and start climbing up the side of the mountain. They literally had to run for their lives in the middle of the night. The bridges and roads were washed out and they were stranded for days clinging to the side of the mountain waiting for rescuers to be able to get to them.

In 1989 Hurricane Hugo came far enough inland that it hit North Carolina at almost full force. My friend lived there at the time and their town was with out power for 30 days. Luckily they had a community generator that the town members took turns using 2 hours a day for each family, to keep their food supplies from spoiling.

Hurricanes and Cyclones are the result of warm ocean water and low pressure systems. The warmer the ocean the more likely a hurricane will occur. Hurricanes help cool the tropical regions and warm the cooler regions of the Earth, therefore they are not going away they are part of our natural warming and cooling process. The more the Global Warming Earth experiences the more frequent hurricanes will become as well as stronger.

In the last few years we have seen Hurricanes increase in their intensity and severity, this is due to Global Warming. As the Earth gets warmer the oceans get warmer which produces more hurricanes and builds their strength. Public awareness is becoming more important due to the changes in the Earths climate.

I'm sure we all remember Andrew, Sumatra and of course Katrina. These hurricanes caused massive destruction and it has taken years for the people and governments to recover. In some cases people were with out food or water for weeks and in some cases months. None of these people were prepared for a natural disaster. Please don't wait until its too late to prepare for a natural disaster in your area. Find out what you need to do to prepare and to survive for several days on your own.

How to prepare for a Hurricane/Cyclone

Inventory you home (take pictures if possible) Free form at iii.org, Store this information someplace other than your own home, a friend or families home.

Have a plan, Know where you will go, IE: Hotel, Shelter or friends/families house (keep a map in your car) Be prepared to alter you route for road closures.

Here is a sample list;

• Sleeping bags/blankets and Pillows
• Battery operated Radios, Lighting and Extra Batteries
• First Aid Kits
• Food Supplies (dry or canned goods, can opener, plates cups ect.) enough for 3 days for each person.
• Fresh Water Supplies, or a portable water filter system (enough for 3-7 days per person)
• Medical Prescriptions, a 1 month supply (store in waterproof container or ziplock bags)
• Important Documents, IE, Drivers licenses, Birth Certs, Soc Sec Cards, Insurance Policies, Ect. (also store in water proof container or ziplock bags)

If we learn to focus and apply resources that are naturally available to us we can not only live better but survive just about any thing that should come our way. We need to learn to do things as our great grandparents and grandparents did. We all know they survived depressions, dust storms, hurricanes, tornadoes and much much more.

Hurricane Preparedness Week for 2009 is from May 24th through May 30th. The goal is to inform the public about the hazards of hurricanes and show what ACTIONS should be taken.
