Something for Everyone in New York
There are so many famous sights, districts, shops and attractions in New York that you'll feel you know them before you get there. But nothing beats the experience of really being there.
New York is the city with something for everyone. Whoever you are and whatever you enjoy it’s worth travelling to New York City.
Some of the most famous sights in the world are in the city area, such as Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, Wall Street and a number of famous bridges. A new, exciting sight that has been added is the New York City Waterfalls. This is a major new work of public art created by artist Olafur Eliasson. As you cruise along the Hudson River and through New York Harbor you can admire these 90 to 120-foot tall installations, designed to protect water quality and aquatic life. Sadly they’re only a temporary addition.
Try the real aircraft carrier museum, the Intrepid, or the more intimate art gallery, the 19th Century Frick Collection. For one of the most famous cultural institutions in the world visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Formed in 1870, the museum's collection now contains more than two million works of art from all around the world, from all times in human history. Spanning the history of world art, the museum houses hundreds of world-famous masterpieces.
When you travel to New York you’ll recognise many of the districts you visit by their famous names: Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown, Central Park, Theater District, Tribeca, Little Italy, Soho, Chelsea, Greenwich Village and Wall Street.
Travel New York for a shoppers’ paradise. Among the famous names are department stores, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. FAO Schwartz is the ultimate toy store for toy lovers from all over the world. Tiffany & Co. offers fine jewellery, timepieces, sterling silverware, china, crystal, stationery and fragrances. With the finest quality men's and women's fashions, Saks Fifth Avenue is renowned for its taste and elegance.
If sport is your thing then New York has it covered:
• Baseball: New York Yankees, New York Mets
• Basketball: New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks
• NFL Football: New York Giants, New York Jets
• NFL Hockey: New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils
• MLS Soccer: New York Metrostars
Travel to New York; there’s something waiting for you there.

Why does New York have 2 of every professional sport?
I would like to know why the city has two of each sport: football, hockey, baseball, and how do New Yorkers choose between the two teams? Is it by area in New York? Do they mix and match? Or is one side of NY the Jets/Islanders/Mets side and the other the Giants/Rangers/Yankee's side? And why doesn't this happen in basketball? Is it because of the New Jersey Nets?????????? Sorry for so many questions, I guess I got on a roll.
New York City itself has an approximate population of 8 million people.
New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area (as defined by the US Census Bureau) has an estimated population of NINETEEN million people. If you include the CSA, that number jumps to 22 million people.

So, with teams spread out (New Jersey, Bronx, Queens, Long Island, Manhattan), there's a lot people in a large area to support two teams in the greater metropolitan area. This occurs in other metropolitan areas (Angels-Dodgers, Giants-Athletics, Raiders-49ers, Lakers-Clippers, Cubs-Sox) as well.
Sports loyalties are mostly regional or hereditary. Some sports fans only follow one team in one sport, ignoring the other sports. Some corporations own more than one franchise. The Yankees (MLB) at one time also controlled the New Jersey Nets (NBA), and the New Jersey Devils (NHL).
Also, with the many television stations and cable networks, there are numerous media outlets which can support the teams financially. WFAN is the local sports radio station, and with it's clear channel signal at 660 AM, can be heard quite some distance at night. ESPN Radio also broadcasts in the city, at 1050 AM.
