Which design of hull shape will you be using when building a wood boat?

If you've decided that you're going to take on the challenge of building a wood boat, you may want to do some research into different hull designs, so that you know the boat you are making properly serves the purpose that you want it for. You don't want to start building a speed boat with a flat bottom for example, but why? This article aims to uncover the reasons behind different hull designs.

Chined and hard-chined hulls can be divided into three sub types, those being flat-bottomed, V-bottomed and multi-chined. If you're building a wooden boat from ply, you will more than likely be using one of these designs. They are some of the easiest create and are formed from flat sheets of wood (usually ply) which are set at angles to each other.

Flat bottoms are fairly easy to build and provide a good basis for stability, but as you increase the speed on the water, this shape will cause more resistance due to it's less streamlined design and therefore you'll be in for a more bumpy ride. This is why you'll see this design used a lot in rowing boats, but not for speed boats!

V bottoms are another simple design to build and being more streamlined in shape, cut through the water much better at speed. By flattening the V out towards the back of the boat, this will also help to add stability and allow it to plane at speed, creating a smoother ride.

As I just mentioned planning, it seems natural to move onto Planing hulls next. These hulls are designed so that as the boat speeds up, the hull rises in the water and runs along the surface. This is caused by something that is known as ‘dynamic lift'. This design is commonly used in speed boats as it reduces drag from contact with the water and allow for greater speed. Plus it takes more power to get to planing speed and these boats usually tend to have larger engines. This shape does mean less maneuverability at slower speeds though.

Displacement hulls are another option you may choose. As the name suggests, this design is based around displacing the water by the shape of the hull, basically pushing the water out of the way, rather than passing over the top of it.

Round hulls are the most versatile designs, but also the most difficult to build and therefore the most expensive. They are good at providing a smoother ride and speed, but also more easy to handle at lower speeds too, so are good if you are looking for something with a good all round performance (excuse the pun!).

Now, obviously and as previously mentioned with regard to V shaped hull flattening out at the back, you can also sometimes combine different hulls shapes to try and maximize the benefits of each and minimize the disadvantages. Combination hulls e.g. semi-planning, semi-displacement are examples of this. This allows for a combination of speed and maneuverability with greater strength.

So there you have it, a brief description about the various different hulls designs. Now you'll have some more idea of why boats are built the shape they are and this might shed new light on your own boat design.

Nah, it's mostly a 150 with a tailwheel. 90 hp instead of 100. Not a bad little plane, but these days more expensive than a 150. Many people become particularly concerned with their personal safety when they are planning a trip overseas. How do you keep yourself safe in an area where you don't speak the local language or understand the local customs? How can you make sure you won't be taken advantage of while traveling? Many travelers consider pepper spray an effective option for personal protection while away from home.

While this is a very popular method of self defense here in the United States, you may worry that you'll be stopped by airport security if you try to take your self defense spray with you onto the plane. Although your fears are certainly for good reason, as airline restrictions do place limitations on what you can bring on the plane with you, with proper planning you should be able to bring your spray to most destinations.

In most areas of the United States, pepper spray is legal to carry and use for personal protection. However, transporting it over state lines can be a little tricky if you are traveling by plane. This can become even more difficult if you plan to travel out of the country with your self defense spray, though it's certainly not impossible.

Your first step is to find out the local laws regarding self defense spray at your destination. There may be specific limitations on the carrying of it in specific states or cities, or even into particular types of locations. If you cannot legally carry the spray at your destination, don't bother packing it. It's also important to make sure that the canister you plan to bring meets all local regulations. Some areas restrict the canister size or ingredients.

When traveling by air, there are restrictions on traveling with disabling chemicals or devices. There are specific rules stating that pepper spray cannot be carried on your person or in your carryon luggage while on the plane. However, your checked baggage can include canisters up to four ounces in size. Most pepper spray canisters designed to be carried on a keychain or in a pocket or purse come in under this limit, so this should not be a problem. However, larger canisters such as those designed for home use tend to be too large to legally pack in your suitcase.

When traveling with pepper spray, even with canisters under the 4 ounce limit, be sure to tell the airline that you have the canister when you check in your luggage at the baggage counter. They are legally required to inspect the canister to make sure that there is a locking device. Otherwise, your pepper spray could accidentally discharge while inside your suitcase in the plane. Be sure to keep the pepper spray canister in a convenient location before checking your baggage so that you don't have to dig through your suitcase at the counter.

Do not try to conceal a canister of pepper spray in your purse or pocket. Even if it's small enough to do so, remember that you will need to pass through a metal detector prior to boarding the plane. Always alert the airline if you have packed pepper spray into your bag. If you try to get through security with pepper spray in your luggage, it will probably be confiscated.

Our Carbon Fiber Hoods: Strength, Lightness, and Beauty

Whenever a hardcore sports car passes us by, we can't help but drool over its hot exterior. The appearance attracts us to want to keep on staring. Guess what? Magazine Article: Airplanes will never reach 500 mph?

I remember reading an old magazine article in a major flying magazine 15-25 years ago, in which they reprinted a formerly published 1920's article. This well written piece detailed all the scientific reasons why airplanes will never, ever be able to reach 500 mph in level flight. It was before the advent of turbocharging, turbines, high altitude flight, rocket power, etc... but stated quite clearly that 500 mph will NEVER be reached. Weight, hp, drag were all considered.

Many predictions have been incorrect based upon the knowledge at the time.

Fuselage of a Boeing 737
The fuselage (from the French fusel "spindle-shaped") is an aircraft's main body section that holds crew and passengers or cargo. In single-engine aircraft it will usually contain an engine, although in some amphibious aircraft the single engine is mounted on a pylon attached to the fuselage which in turn is used as a floating hull. The fuselage also serves to position control and stabilization surfaces in specific relationships to lifting surfaces, required for aircraft stability and maneuverability.

The structural elements resemble those of a bridge, with emphasis on using linked triangular elements. The aerodyamic shape is completed by additional elements called formers and stringers and is then covered with fabric and painted. Most early aircraft used this technique with wood and wire trusses and this type of structure is still in use in many lightweight aircraft using welded steel tube trusses. This method is especially suitable for amateur-built aircraft kits, where a complete welded truss structure is delivered with the fitting of other components, covering, and finishing completed by the user, as it ensures that a robust, uniform load bearing structure is within the completed aircraft. A box truss fuselage structure can also be built out of wood - often covered with plywood - as can be seen on this Ibis canard fuselage.
Geodetic construction

Geodetic structural elements were used by Barnes Wallis for British Vickers between the wars and into World War II to form the whole of the fuselage, including its aerodynamic shape. In this type of construction multiple flat strip stringers are wound about the formers in opposite spiral directions, forming a basket-like appearance. This proved to be light, strong, and rigid and had the advantage of being made almost entirely of wood. A similar construction using aluminum alloy was used in the Vickers Warwick with less materials than would be required for other structural types. The geodesic structure is also redundant and so can survive localized damage without catastrophic failure. A fabric covering over the structure completed the aerodynamic shell (see the Vickers Wellington for an example of a large warplane which uses this process). The logical evolution of this is the creation of fuselages using molded plywood, in which multiple sheets are laid with the grain in differing directions to give the monocoque type below.

In this method, the exterior surface of the fuselage is also the primary structure. A typical early form of this (see the Lockheed Vega) was built using molded plywood, where the layers of plywood are formed over a "plug" or within a mold. A later form of this structure uses fiberglass cloth impregnated with polyester or epoxy resin, instead of plywood, as the skin. A simple form of this used in some amateur-built aircraft uses rigid expanded foam plastic as the core, with a fiberglass covering, eliminating the necessity of fabricating molds, but requiring more effort in finishing (see the Rutan VariEze). P-38 Lightning or De Havilland Mosquito?

The Mosquito, without a shadow of a doubt. The Lightning was a truly superb aircraft, and an absolute work of art; but the Mossie was proof of the old adage "If something looks right ....".

The Mosquito was used a fighter, a recce aircraft, a bomber, an anti-shipping aircraft, a transport, operated in Europe, in the Pacific, from the deck of an aircraft carrier....

As a bomber it could carry the same payload as a to Berlin as the B-17. As a recce aircraft; well, the USAAF had the F-5 version of the Lightning, but still needed the Mossie.

The crying shame is that there are (at present) no examples of this beautiful aircraft flying anywhere in the world.

Spitfire – Fighter Plane

The Spitfire was a single-seat fighter flat surface manufactured by Supermarine, and designed by R.J. Mitchell. Mitchell continued to promote to modifications to the flat surface until his death in 1937.

The Spitfire made its combat unveiling came on October 16, 1939. It was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) for the period of World War II and gained immortal fame for the period of the summer months of 1940 by portion to defeat the German air attacks for the period of the Battle of Britain.
