Do Credit Card Providers Exist To Collect Interest?

When you use your credit card for pleasure items and necessities, the last thing on your mind is the interest you would need to pay at the end of the month. When your card statement arrives however, the interest payable can no longer escape you.

Grudgingly you pay your bill and moan about the little impact your payment has made to the capital owed and you blame it on the interest. You might think that credit card companies exist just to collect interest from you, but this could not be further from the truth. For the purpose of this article let us look at American Express.

In addition to providing credit card products, American Express is actively involved in giving back to the community. In 2005 they contributed a total of $36.1 million to three main areas, Economic Independence, Cultural Heritage and Community Service.

Under the Economic Independence banner, American Express sought to develop and sustain economic self-reliance through programmes that supported the youth. They achieved this by promoting career awareness, employment options, and by engaging young people in training and workplace experiences. There were also programmes on entrepreneurship and small business development.

Recently American Express provided grants to Junior Achievement Worldwide, a program where American Express employees team up with local Junior Achievement organizations to teach students the basics of business, economics and career skills.

Another recipient of grant funding was the National Council of La Raza which supports workforce readiness programs serving Hispanic immigrants in communities throughout the country.

Under the Cultural Heritage banner the credit card provider sought to preserve and protect the natural and built environment so that it could be enjoyed by current and future residents and visitors. Recently funded programmes under this banner included The Constitutional Foundation, an organisation which supports the Constitutional Walking Tour of Philadelphia the aim of which is to increase the number of visitors to the historic Independence Mall. The second recipient was The International Civil Rights Museum. This is an organisation that supports a the building of a new museum that will transform the Woolworth building in Greensboro NC into a museum and learning center intended to commemorate its role in the sit-in movement of 1960.

The final area is that of Community Service, American Express funded the volunteer efforts of thousands of its employees in their local communities through the company's in-house Global Volunteer Action Fund. In addition American Express' responds to worldwide disaster victims via the Red Cross and other relief agencies.
Two of the most recent grants were given to Habitat for Humanity where American Express employees got involved in building homes for low-income families in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Greensboro, NC and New York, NY and Project Angel Food which delivered meals to men, women, and children battling life-threatening illnesses in Los Angeles County.

So the next time you have to pay your credit card bill, remember that the credit card providers like American Express are involved in giving a lot back to others, it is not all about the interest on cards but about the interest in others as well.

What does the Toyota dealer mean by "Clean engine"?

The scheduled maintenance brochure from my Toyota dealer lists the services that should be performed at various milages and the cost of each maintenance package. One of the services included with the most expensive package, to be performed at 60,000 miles, is "Clean engine". What should I expect the dealer to do in the performance of this service? Does it just mean to wipe up stuff under the hood, or to actually clean inside the engine?

Why not get the dealer completely out of the picture by reading your service schedule @ 60,000 miles in your glove compartment. Your trusted Toyota dealer is trying to slip one over on you. Nowhere in your scheduled Toyota service maintenance manual does it say (ever) that your engine needs cleaning internally or externally. If there's any question in your mind call the Toyota Customer Service number in your glove compartment operators manual.

I own an 04 Camry that we bought new. Nowhere does it say at any of the 5,000 mile oil change intervals that the motor needs to be cleaned.

In 2008 the mountain town of Ruidoso, North East of the White Sands Missile Range, never expected to get hit by a storm that was a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico just a couple days before. This is the town were Smokey The Bear had been rescued from one of the worst wild fires ever. Their biggest worry usually is forest fire.

I watched T.V. as Hurricane Dolly traveled from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the mountains just east of where I live in New Mexico. In a matter of just a few hours Dolly dumped so much rain on Ruidoso, the river running through the middle of the town flooded with no warning. It took out bridges, camp grounds and trailer parks. People camping in the local camp grounds were awakened in the middle of the night and told to grab what they could and start climbing up the side of the mountain. They literally had to run for their lives in the middle of the night. The bridges and roads were washed out and they were stranded for days clinging to the side of the mountain waiting for rescuers to be able to get to them.

In 1989 Hurricane Hugo came far enough inland that it hit North Carolina at almost full force. My friend lived there at the time and their town was with out power for 30 days. Luckily they had a community generator that the town members took turns using 2 hours a day for each family, to keep their food supplies from spoiling.

Hurricanes and Cyclones are the result of warm ocean water and low pressure systems. The warmer the ocean the more likely a hurricane will occur. Hurricanes help cool the tropical regions and warm the cooler regions of the Earth, therefore they are not going away they are part of our natural warming and cooling process. The more the Global Warming Earth experiences the more frequent hurricanes will become as well as stronger.

In the last few years we have seen Hurricanes increase in their intensity and severity, this is due to Global Warming. As the Earth gets warmer the oceans get warmer which produces more hurricanes and builds their strength. Public awareness is becoming more important due to the changes in the Earths climate.

I'm sure we all remember Andrew, Sumatra and of course Katrina. These hurricanes caused massive destruction and it has taken years for the people and governments to recover. In some cases people were with out food or water for weeks and in some cases months. None of these people were prepared for a natural disaster. Please don't wait until its too late to prepare for a natural disaster in your area. Find out what you need to do to prepare and to survive for several days on your own.

How to prepare for a Hurricane/Cyclone

Inventory you home (take pictures if possible) Free form at iii.org, Store this information someplace other than your own home, a friend or families home.

Have a plan, Know where you will go, IE: Hotel, Shelter or friends/families house (keep a map in your car) Be prepared to alter you route for road closures.

Here is a sample list;

• Sleeping bags/blankets and Pillows
• Battery operated Radios, Lighting and Extra Batteries
• First Aid Kits
• Food Supplies (dry or canned goods, can opener, plates cups ect.) enough for 3 days for each person.
• Fresh Water Supplies, or a portable water filter system (enough for 3-7 days per person)
• Medical Prescriptions, a 1 month supply (store in waterproof container or ziplock bags)
• Important Documents, IE, Drivers licenses, Birth Certs, Soc Sec Cards, Insurance Policies, Ect. (also store in water proof container or ziplock bags)

If we learn to focus and apply resources that are naturally available to us we can not only live better but survive just about any thing that should come our way. We need to learn to do things as our great grandparents and grandparents did. We all know they survived depressions, dust storms, hurricanes, tornadoes and much much more.

Hurricane Preparedness Week for 2009 is from May 24th through May 30th. The goal is to inform the public about the hazards of hurricanes and show what ACTIONS should be taken.

Nhl Playoff Tickets - 2010 Nhl Season May Be Last For Some Stars

The regular season for the National Hockey League is wrapping up, meaning that just about all the spots for the playoff games are decided. The Eastern Conference is led by the Washington Capitals, followed by the New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators. The Western Conference has the Chicago Blackhawks on top, with the San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Phoenix Coyotes, Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche behind them. The postseason is heating up, and fans can find <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/nhl-playoff-tickets/">NHL playoff tickets</a> at <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/">StubHub.com</a>.

For the teams who don't make the playoffs, the most veteran players start toying with the decision to come back or retire. On Wed., April 4, it was the St. Louis Blues left wing Keith Tkachuk who announced the 2009-10 season would be his last. He has more than put in his time in the league, finishing with 19 seasons under his belt. In 66 games this season, he scored 13 goals and 17 assists. He has also played with the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes and the Atlanta Thrashers. At the announcement, Tkachuk talked to the press, where he cited his health as a reason to step away. Along with his time in the NHL, Tkachuk has also played in multiple Olympics and has won a silver medal for his efforts.

Dallas Stars center Mike Modano isn't quite as decided as Tkachuk, but he could potentially also be retiring following the 2009-10 season. He told reporters he was contemplating retiring, and a decision will likely come from him after the season ends. Leaving the Stars would be harder on Modano than most, as he has spent his entire career with the franchise, dating back to when they were the Minnesota North Stars. He joined the North Stars when he was the first overall selection of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. In 57 games this season, he had 13 goals and 15 assists. Like Tkachuk, he has also made appearances in multiple Olympic Winter Games.

The Anaheim Ducks could have a big hole next season if right wing Teemu Selanne decides to retire. The 39-year-old star is still going strong, making him a little less likely to retire than other veterans. He has won a Stanley Cup Championship with the Ducks, meaning he doesn't have many milestones left to accomplish. This season, he scored 26 goals and 21 assists in 53 games. He has also played for the Winnipeg Jets, San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche.

Players aren't the only ones retiring after this season. The Pittsburgh Penguins' longtime home, Mellon Arena, will also retire following the 2009-10 season. Affectionately called "The Igloo" by fans, Mellon Arena has been a landmark of the NHL scene, but it also grew more dilapidated over the years.  The Penguins will move into the Consol Energy Center next season. On the Penguins' website, star Sidney Crosby expressed his feelings on The Igloo and said, "When I got here I found out pretty quickly that this arena has an amazing feel. It's an atmosphere you have to be at to really describe. The crowd feels like it is really on top of you they are so involved in the game. It's a really fun building to play in."

Category 2: District 13 uses spies within the Capitol to locate Peeta and inform the distraught Katniss that he's alive, triggering her to (of course) drag Gale off to go rescue him without thinking it through, forcing District 13 to become more involved in the revolution in order to rescue Katniss from the Capitol that her and Gale are currently running strait to.
