Who's coming over to the Isle of Man this year to celebrate the TT centenary??

I want to know just out of interest! By the way, buy the new IOM creameries vintage cheddar in the black TT centenary packet. My church (Marown church - main road douglas-peel) are doing catering. Hot and cold foods will be availiable in practice week and TT week.

I wish I was! I really didn't want to miss this but I will be doing. I just haven't the money and there is no way I would find somewhere to stay unless I booked a year ago. It's hard enough when it's a normal year and having two kids that hate camping kinda spoils half the fun!

What You Need To Know when taking Your 1st International Trip…

When you are planning to take your first international flight to visit and tour other countries, there a few things you should know before hand about the flight and what to do when you get to your destination. When you make your airline reservations whatever you do get an aisle seat. Even if you have to go to the airport to pick up the tickets an aisle seat is MOST important on those long flights. My husband, John, and I always, and I mean always, get aisle seats across from each other on the plane unless it is a plane that has a bank of seats with only have two seats in the bank. Take some really comfortable shoes. I always wear my comfortable shoes on the plane because they take up too much room in the suitcase (they’re Rockports, clunky but comfortable). When you get on the airplane, snag a blanket and a pillow for everyone in your party. They are always scarce and you might not need it right away, but you will later. Take sleeping pills with you and try to sleep it helps. You will arrive very early in the morning and will be exhausted if you don’t try to get a little sleep. I can never sleep on airplanes but the pills help me relax a little. You will be landing very early in the morning so your hotel room will not be available until two in the afternoon. There have been plenty of European hotel lobbies I have slept in until I could get into my room. Don’t wear anything that is nylon on the plane because it will not breathe. The most comfortable thing is a long loose dress or skirt and a top with sleeves. For men causal slacks and a long sleeved shirt either with or without a sport coat. The best thing I ever wore was a floor length jeans dress with sleeves that buttoned all the way up from the hem to the neck. If it was hot, I unbuttoned it; if it was cold I buttoned it all the way up. Worked like a charm. When you are on the airplane get up and walk around every hour unless you are asleep. This will keep your ankles from swelling and don’t take off your shoes, just loosen them. Drink lots of water and avoid salt. Food on the airlines is minimal and awful. I’ve been known to pack sandwiches that are far better than anything they have to offer, just make sure you eat them before you land. Keep toiletries in your carry on, toothpaste, toothbrush, moisturizer, waterless face cleanser (the sinks on the plane in the bathroom are nasty) and tissues for removal. Moisturize your body a lot on the plane because the dry and recycled air zaps your skin. I take a small spritz bottle filled with water and spray my face every once in a while, it soothing and keeps my face hydrated. Don’t laugh the stewardess’s do this too. Be sure you take diarrhea and constipation pills with you. When I travel long distances one or the other always gets me. One trick I learned is to take some Neosporin with you and Q-tips. Put the Neosporin on the Q-tip and dot the base of your nostril with it. This will stop any germs that are circulating in the closed cabins. Don’t over pack. If you are not going on a cruise you will be schlepping your bags either everyday or every few days. My advice is to pack all of your clothes in tan, black and white, which can all be interspersed with each other. One pair of black slacks and one pair of tan slacks can be paired with a variety of tops. A couple of scarves help make outfits different for the ladies and also come in handy as a head covers for religious sites. One pair of dark slacks and a pair of Khakis also work with different shirts for the men. Don’t forget a travel umbrella. Make sure your camera is in working order, you do not want to miss any of interesting things in the countries that you are visiting. Take plenty of extra photo cards if you are taking digital because I assume you won’t be taking a laptop to download you pictures every night. Buy that stuff locally and get more then you think you need, don’t cheapskate on this, over there it will cost you your eyeteeth. Besides you can always return it! You want to take a daytime touring pack that zippers closed. Carry in it, bottled water, Tums, hand wipes, a collapsible cup, Alka-Seltzer, SUNSCREEN AND LIP BALM, a small snack, an extra pair of glasses, both sun and prescription, a hat and if you are on a long bus ride, a book. I would also pack eyeshades so if you are on that long bus ride you can black out the sun for a nap. Keep money and credit cards inside in a zippered compartment. While you are out enjoying your new destination never put your pack over the chair back or on the chair beside you when at a café or dining alfresco. I would always put the pack strap looped underneath the chair leg so no one could run off with it. Take lots of ones and fives. They are useful for street vendors and tips. Everyone loves the dollar. You will need to change some of your money into the currency of the country that you are touring. Shop around before you go to get the best deal. If you have a good relationship with your bank, they may be the best deal you will find. You will have to convert some of your cash into the local currency for little items like water, lunch or soda. Remember that no country will reconvert coins so spend those liberally. I know this very well since I have a necklace and a bracelet made out of foreign coins. Just use common sense when you are touring. Keep in mind that you are visiting another country and they don’t have the same rules as your home country. It is always best to respect their customs and laws; you are, after all, just visiting. If there is one place where Southern California charm, history, style, beaches and sun all converge, it has to be on the 7.4 square miles of ground you'll find at the west end of the sweeping, skyscraper-high Coronado Bridge. The makers of the movie "Some like it Hot" were certainly onto something when Coronado Island was selected for that movie's locale. Overlooking the Coronado beach

Just 2.3 miles across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado Island is an island retreat in every sense you can imagine - it's still relatively quiet, studded with swaying palm trees, blessed with some of the best beaches in California, and adorned by some of the most magnificent and historic buildings in San Diego County.

But lest you think this sounds like a great place to live as well, be assured that the price of admission will keep out all but the most well-heeled - unless of course you're willing to live on bread and water while you make mortgage payments so high they each could buy a late-model car.

But that's why it's so fun to visit Coronado. It's like appearing in your own episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," if only for a few days at a time. Stroll through the famous Hotel del Coronado and marvel at fine jewelry and designer clothing, or visit the fashionable downtown boutiques and trendy restaurants. Sit at an outdoor caf?nd people-watch to your heart's content, carefully distinguishing between the everyday tourists and the tony CEO's, families in tow, everybody stylized to the hilt.

No question, the grand dame of Coronado is the Hotel del Coronado and this island's life simply revolves around that property. No one comes to the island without paying homage to the hotel, meandering through its bars and lobbies and garden pathways and then stepping out onto one of the broadest beaches in all of California. There are constant reminders that, yes, this was the filming location for "Some like it Hot" and, yes, Marilyn Monroe once stood right where you are standing. Even some of Ms. Monroe's more tasteful pin-up photos are displayed at the hotel's entrance.

But surprisingly, the "Hotel del" as locals Hotel del Coronado entrace call it, is not the only game in town and, whether because of price or a desire not to be staying smack in the middle of all the activity, many visitors opt for one of several other lodging options on the island. Our stay at the Glorietta Bay Inn was quite a different experience from the Hotel del, even though the grand dame is located right across the street.

Staying at the Glorietta Bay Inn was an opportunity to experience a historic San Diego mansion - the one that was built by John Dietrich Spreckels, a figure well-known in the city as someone who played a key role in developing San Diego during the late 1800's and after the turn of the century. He bought the utility company, street car system, water company and eventually he controlled even the Hotel del Coronado. Visitors to San Diego's Balboa Park will recognize the name from the famous Spreckels Pavilion, where visitors attend concerts given on the very organ Spreckels gave to the park when it was opened during the 1915 Pan-American Exposition.

The mansion itself is an impressive piece of architecture - Italian Renaissance style, all white, multi-story with dramatic lines. Inside, the wide marble staircase was our pathway to Room 126 - the Albright Room, a spacious second-floor with an open, airy feel and views to the yacht harbor, the Coronado Bridge and, in the distance, the mountains east of San Diego. Decorated in a French Country motif, the room featured flowers, tasteful paintings and floral bed quilts with matching drapes. Almost the size of a suite, this room was furnished with classic furniture reproductions befitting the era in which the house was built.

Downstairs, the Glorietta Bay Inn features a music room, with grand piano, in which guests can enjoy their complimentary breakfast of pastries, cereal, breads and juices. There are other areas, as well, that are quiet pleasant to sit in and enjoy the inn's colorful surroundings. The inn is quick to put a visitor in just the right mood to enjoy the island's many amenities and natural attractions.

The Glorietta Bay Inn is conveniently located just across the street from the beach and, if a California beach vacation is what you're after, this is one of the best places to find it. If you follow Orange Avenue just a few steps east, there is the downtown business area. The road curves ever-so-gently through the business district, Hotel Del Coronado as seen from the beachnever seeming too urban or commercial because the avenue is bisected by a wide lawn. Mature palm trees grace both sides of the thoroughfare giving a natural feeling to what otherwise might be just an ordinary business district. Of course there's nothing ordinary about the many historic buildings along meandering Orange Avenue.

The visitor notices an interesting mix of businesses downtown - exclusive upscale boutiques and fine jewelry stores are side-by-side with surf shops and tourist tee-shirt stores. Over at Beach Grill and Deli, local island style is conveyed through porcelain statue-like creation that has the menu on a surfboard, and a 50's roller-skating carhop pointing the way. Next door, the Moo-Time Creamery has the same sort of curiosities, in this case fashioned after Elvis and a cow. But just across the street is a store with a zillion-dollar assortment of jewels even Robin Leach would be hard-pressed to afford.

Restaurants are plentiful, although a word to the wise about a place we visited called Miguel's. Apparently the word is out that this is good Mexican food because we showed up at 7 p.m Thursday to find a one-hour wait time before we could even be seated. We toughed it out and the food was good - but we're not sure it was that good.

If you're driving to the island - and most people do, whether they have a rental car or they drove in from someplace in California - it's well worth exploring the entire island. The Silver Strand beach area goes on for miles. The east side of the island is the ferry landing area where there is a shopping center, restaurants and a quick boat ride to downtown San Diego.

It's also fun to look at the beautiful homes. Truth be told, many of the homes are nothing special - except in price. Ordinary, average, no-view two- and three-bedroom homes sell easily in the millions. There may be nice condos for under a million dollars but the really good ones with the views are well above that. Even those with mansions back in the Midwest could not sell them for enough money to buy more than a fixer-upper on this island.

Even if you don't have a car, there are many other ways to explore Coronado. For example, Coronado Pedicab Tours offers 30 and Coronado Pier 60-minute tours to view all of the island sights. Another option is a "vintage motor tour" that takes guests around Coronado in a 1965 Volkswagen Microbus. Of, if you want some exercise, there are several walking tours including one that leaves right from the Glorietta Bay Inn and focuses on all of the local historic areas.

The island includes many attractions. For example, the Museum of History and Art showcases the island's early history, with special attention given to the military bases that have called the island home. Theater is a big part of the local entertainment scene and visitors can enjoy performances at the Coronado Community Theater and the Lamb's Player's Theatre. Art-lovers will enjoy the Art-in-the-park exhibition put on the first and third Sundays of each month.
