Airline Update (there Always Is)
Want to buy a better seat?
Airlines are learning from each other and are now charging extra for seats with additional legroom, including emergency row seats. A handful of airlines including, United and AirTran, are currently doing this and Northwest announced this week that it is going to begin charging an extra $15 per segment for what it calls "Coach Choice" seats. Airtran charges $35 extra for more desirable seats and United also charges an additional fee for its larger Economy Plus seats.
What am I being charged for now?
This nickel and dime trend will only continue to expand in the future. Experts are predicting that checked baggage will be charged next. Many ask, why not raise the entire fare? Great question since the aggravation level with airlines continues to increase. Also, be on the lookout for airlines advertising fares that are not inclusive of all fees including fuel surcharges. Airlines have informally requested from the Department of Transportation to have fuel surcharges treated as government charges and added on at the point of sale.
Southwest leads the way again!
Once again Southwest is leading the way. In this case, they are increasing fares by $10 per segment. Wouldn't you know it, other airlines have followed!
Northwest has announced a new pilot agreement
The pilot's union agreed to a new Northwest affiliate company that will fly regional jets with 51 to 76 seats. Northwest will acquire regional jets so it can retire its fleet of 154 DC-9s. Northwest's fleet of DC-9s average 34 years of age. Yes, planes that have been flying since Richard Nixon was in office!

I would like to use my United miles for plane ticket to Russia, who accepts them besides United Airlines?
I tried to utilize them on the United web page, but they won't let me do it. Is there anothre airliner co out there that will let me use United Airlines' frequesnt flyer miles? Thanks!
Any airline that is part of the Star Alliance (which United is part of) will allow you to do it. You can go to their website, www.staralliance.com to see which airlines participate and how to use your miles - I know Lufthansa is a member and they fly to Russia through Germany but there are other airlines also.
